Here's the follow up normally reserved for Monday.
I looked at the schedule at the start of the season and quickly penciled in 3 losses. Arkansas (because they owned us the last few years), LSU (because they are LSU and I can remember Cotton Bowl appearances, and Alabama (because they're Alabama). Then I took a look at who we had where and who the starters were going to be. LaTech had "trap" written all over it, but then after a Hurricane, I was confident they'd have the kinks worked out.
A few powder puff match ups: namely SMU, SCSTU, SHSU, and Ole Miss. There was 4 "w's". Next I stared at the screen and thought, "There's no way you take a first year coach, with an air raid offense, new coordinators, and a bratty Fish Qb and win on the road at some of these places. Simply put, it wasn't gonna happen.
So I settled on breaking .500 and hoped like hell to make a bowl game. Then October happened.
So where do you from there I thought. They've already exceeded my expectations. There's no way this could get better right? Sure they'd have to go to Alabama and play the #1 team in the country, but damn, I already knew that was a loss. "Take your lumps" right?
And while standing as a groomsmen with 40 seconds left to go in the game Saturday, it finally hit me. The bratty little Qb, with a new coach, and all new schemes had left College Station 48 hours ago. When they would return later that night, they'd be rock stars.
Pleased as punch to be in the SEC. Happy to see folks telling the boys congrats from all across the country. Excited about the future of #2 and co in the upcoming years. Lastly I'll add that being welcomed in the conference earlier was met with a "hat in hand" and "thank you kind sir" by most. Me included. I'm over that now.
Welcome to A&M, SEC. Be glad YOU get to play US.
If this comes off as being a bit like a gloat, I'm ok with that. Now give us our due, give Johnny the damn hardware, give Sumlin COY, give Kliff whatever he wants, and give me the landthieves in the Fiesta.
Oh and, for the bama crowd that reads this, see you at Kyle next year. We get loud too.
Gig em.
