Missouri State Vs. Wichita State on right now on ESPN3. Second quarter just underway.

If you miss it, they're usually archived & you can watch later.

Just thought it might give some a nice break to watch two former LV point guards coaching against each other.

Here is the replay link (if it works): Streaming Online - WatchESPN

Full disclosure (and sort-of-spoiler): It's not a close game. So not really giving much away by mentioning the outcome.

Kellie's team won 74-45. The relevance is that we only beat Wichita State 57-51. Sure, yesterday's game was played at Missouri State, but Mizz.St. also beat W.State earlier this season on the road...by twenty (77-57). And Mizz.St. shot around 57 percent from the field today. And Kellie rested her three senior stars for the latter part of the game, whereas we were in a dogfight the entire game.

If Missouri State played Tennessee today, I'd put my money on Kellie's team. They look crisp in their offense, pass the ball well, look for open teammates, and take good shots. They do have three senior stars, so lots of experience. But I doubt they have anyone as highly-recruited as anyone on Tennessee's bench, and although this is only Kellie's third year, she & her staff have obviously worked well to improve the players and build the program.

Just an observation.

Heck if the Lady Vols play like they did against both LSU and Bama most any church league Ladies team could beat them.

The thing about both of these women is they're both earning their stripes. They're not sitting on the end of the bench somewhere as assistants, feeding off the fruits of other's labors, but instead they're driving their own ships. Holly never did that.

When I saw Kellie at NC State, I saw Pat in her. It comes out in her eyes and demeanor. Hard to put into words but she definitely has the Summitt spirit. I know it's not the best move but I always wanted her back at UT.

And just how successful have those two been as head coaches?

Kellie also has one of the best scorers in NCAA history in Jackie on her bench....I loved watching her light up teams back in the day

and she's competitive, but she got sacked by NCState--which was a very good opportunity for her--and I don't think she's done enough to merit getting hired by UT. She seems to be doing a good job at Missouri State--and she is still young. You learn things as a head coach. She is someone to keep an eye on.

That's not the point. They're trying to build something themselves. Did Holly ever try? I know she turned down an offer to become South Carolina's head coach many years ago. And, I heard she had other offers.

Harper was successful at Western, had mediocre results at NC State, and has steadily improved Missouri State over the past 3 years.

Here's Texas coach Karen Aston's hc record: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Aston#Head_Coaching_Record

Notice that she was 15-16 at her lone year at North Texas before being hired at Texas. Decent results at Charlotte (NCAA first round; 3 WNIT appearances). Total HC years before Texas hired her: 5

Harper has 12 years of experience. I'm sure she learned quite a bit from her NC State experience in the ACC.

Would you have turned down Aston based upon her losing record the year before Texas hired her?

In coaching I think you look for someone that is a leader, has great communications skills, has what I call 'gravitas', and is tough but fair. Wins and losses are secondary and follow after the above.

What traits do others look for?

She is certainly driving the stripes out of the Lady Vol's program. She is turning the LVs into a Missouri Valley Conference type lady basketball team with 7 McDAAs, that takes skill.
