...and won't play against Brevard, according to Griffith. Apparently, he re-injured it in practice today and left wearing a protective boot.

So we will have Williams, Hall, Tatum, and Bone out for the game against Brevard I believe. Looks like some guys will get a chance to prove themselves and get some minutes.

Maybe I can go out and play some point guard when it gets out of hand. We won't have anyone else.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read that Williams is playing.

Kenny Hall is 2x the basketball player Pearl is. Steven just takes up space on the floor.

They're playing different positions at the moment. Hall at 5, Pearl at 4.

Hall will compete for minutes with Fields all year. Pearl will likely be relegated to the bench when Maymon gets eligible.

How much will Williams play? i guess we'll see a small lineup with both he and fields out during some periods of the game

You're underestimating Kenny there.

Here's the deal: Kenny probably has three times the talent, but may be giving 1/3 the effort.

Pearl has looked like a wrestler trying to play basketball, but in truth has provided a spark at times. I am hearing that he is improved this year. So, I say give the minutes to someone who is giving it the full effort. I would take effort over talent, personally.

Not sure I agree. I would take talent over effort to a certain extent. Talent can still make the shots, effort just attempts a lot of them...

Kenny definitely had some good games last year but I'll agree, the effort wasn't consistent and therefore the results weren't consistent. I'll give it to Pearl, he works extremely hard out there on the court and I like the way he hustles. He is an offensive liability though but Kenny hasn't proven himself to be a powerhouse or anything either. I would rather see Hall than Pearl simply because of the size difference and Kenny obviously has alot more potential. This one appears to be the same as the Woolridge vs. Pearl argument. Yes, I'd rather see Pearl on the bench but I'm not going to bash the guy like most did last season, especially when he is giving 100%.

Pearl will end up behind Maymon and Hall when it's all said and done. I still wouldn't mind seeing him get on the floor if we need some hard fouls given. But I expect him to fight for some minutes with Woolridge.

You guys aren't giving Steve "the SCHNOZ" enough credit. He is a glue guy, he hustles, her plays stout D, and he gets a few easy buckets because teams don't respect his offensive game at all(and for a good reason I might add). He can guard the 2-4 and is an excellent passer and the kid KNOWS SPACING. He helps our offense run smooth. The only issue I have with Pearl is that I have never seen a player regress half as much as him when it comes to shooting. When he was in HS the kid averaged over 20pts per game. He could shoot the ball from 3 a little, and had a great mid-range game. He puts more effort into the weightroom and defense because he knows he will never be expected to be a big time scorer here, and he has come close to mastering his craft. He has aspired to become Dane Bradshaw, and outside of FT shooting has done a helluva job. I respect the heck out of Stevie. That kid has been chastised more than any UT player I have ever seen outside of Crompton and maybe Woolridge and has never gotten down on himself. He works hard and gives his all for UT and while he may not be the most talented player on the court, no one gives more effort than Steven Pearl. This is college basketball, not the NBA. Work ethic and glue guys are a close 2nd to talent as far as importance goes.

Go Vols!!!

That can really really backfire, though, because when the other players begin to see that hard work isn't necessary to get on the court....

...you have problems.

Better is to make hard work a prerequisite before you can even be seriously considered, and then choose the most talented players from among your hard workers. You may lose some talent and some games early, but it builds a better culture and will pay off in the long run.

Kenny's problem is not effort. Rebounding totals show that. His problem was (and probably will continue to be) dumb fouls.

bring on the bear jew! hate to see kenny and bone hurt but that's why we've got 14 guys that can contribute. love the toughness and physicality that pearl brings to the game. saw him get numerous hands on offensive rebounds to keep the possession alive against brevard (he'll do the same against higher quality opponents bc he'll still go just as hard). obviously you can't play pearl 20+ minutes a game but in short spurts he will provide a lift on defense and keep the offense moving getting shots for the people that need to be taking them.
