Rumors of Kentucky and Petrino are spreading like wildfire. From message boards to ESPN insider rumors, this is getting some traction. Please know that the following is just information passed on. However, it is a FACT that
1) Petrino's daughter still lives in Kentucky
2) Petrino's son still lives in Kentucky
3) Petrino has kept his membership at Kentucky golf courses and other venues of his interest.
4) He has been in Kentucky for the past week.
While it may be noted that I am definitely in favor of a Petrino hire, I am of the opinion that Mitch wouldn't go for it. However, I have a friend who is a teacher at Trinity High School in Louisville and what he told me floored me. It is widely known that Nick Petrino, former Trinity QB and Bobby's son still keeps in touch with the Trinity HS staff and coach Bob Beatty. My buddy told me that Nick has been talking to them recently and he told me that some of his collegues on the football staff told him that Petrino to UK isnt as far fetched as many UK fans may believe. In fact, he told me that he has already been contacted by UK boosters to get a a feel for his interest in the job. He also told me that Nick has been telling the staff that Bobby definitely was remorseful for what he had done and regretted leaving Kentucky (ala Pitino)...Petrino is still a member at Vallhalla golf club, and a lot of their family still live in Louisville. Basically said that Bobby is DEFINITELY interested in moving back to the area, and that there has been contact with UK personnel but didnt necessarily name Mitch or anyone specific. Basically said Kentucky offered him a sure fire way to get back into the SEC ( the non compete clause only applied to SEC West teams) and a way to be back closer to his family in Louisville. Also was stated that Petrino longed to be back into coaching and that if given another chance, he would be more appreciative. ( I know what he did, but sometimes it takes a man hitting rock bottom to appreciate what he has). Another little tidbit of info, is that my friend told me that it almost be a sure fire thing for many of the Trinity recruits to go to UK if Petrino was hired as Petrino is still well liked at Trinity, especially James Quick.
Anyways, it shocked me to hear this info as I was just throwing his name out there as a coach Id want. I never thought this could actually have legs...but when I heard this, it sort of made sense. The hire is more of a match than you think. A coach and a program rock bottom with chances of redemption
What do you think? Do you think Mitch would pull such a bold move like this? Personally Id jump through the roof with excitement if he pulled such a move. I know a lot dont like him because of his shady past. But I think Petrino could change the culture in football at UK and wouldnt have to recruit 4 and 5 star players to do so. I also think he'd be here longer than any of his previous stops for reasons mentioned above. What a story it would be if this happened.
