Kerry Wood to retire after today's game

I still have his minor league rookie card. Injuries hampered a solid career.

Would have been great to see what a healthy career produced, and the retirement shocked me

Despite what happened to him, he was just born with a gift and a curse. The gift to pitch, but he would never, on any team, have stayed healthy.

Also, he's only 34 believe it or not.

I got home from work in time to see the last three innings or so of his 20 strikeout game. The Astros were waving at everything like the whole team had money on the Cubs.

The biggest what-if pitching tragedy of my lifetime is still Dwight Gooden, who (that one game notwithstanding) was way more dominant his rookie year than Wood was. But Kerry Wood's gotta be second.

My dad (who is not even a New York Met fan, by the way), just shakes his head in disgust when I bring up Gooden.

Also, JR Richard was a tragedy too. Gooden ruined his career. Richard was just screwed by the gods.

I still think Gooden's problems were more due to injury than the drugs. The Mets blew his arm away just as surely as the Braves ruined Steve Avery's.

Truth. But I think what the Mets did to Gooden was much more egregious. The innings that Gooden pitched early in his career are just insane.
