If we miss on Gruden, Kevin Gilbride is a name I hope gets some consideration (I certainly think he would). Not only does he have 2 Superbowl rings on his hand, but he has been a very successful OC for a long time. He was the Oilers OC when I lived in Houston (back in the 90's), and was the OC for Jax when they were kicking our tails in the early 2000's, under Coughlin.

He got a HC gig for the Chargers back in the late 90's, but they didn't fare so well (extremely hard for a coordinator to come in and revive a talent-depleted team in the NFL in just a year or two....just ask Kiffin). That's probably why he's not the HC somewhere in the NFL now.

But if we think Saban magic can rub off on his assistants, then surely Coughlin's tough disciplinary style can surely rub off on Gilbride after several season under him. Not to mention, he could likely bring a bright defensive mind with him, from the NFL, to be the next DC.

The reason why I think he could do something here, if he hires a stellar staff, is that he has the talent on board and in this current recruiting class, to bust some head in the SEC...RIGHT NOW. He's not tasked with a rebuilding project like Charlie Cheeseburger was. He has a Ferrari to drive...not a rusty bucket of bolts.

I also think he would command no more than 3.5/yr...with some incentives thrown in for SECC's and NC's.

I would be happy with Strong, Patterson, and Tressel...but the more I think about it, the more intrigued I am about Gilbride. What say ye, ladies and gents?

New York Giants: Kevin Gilbride

EDIT: BTW, for those that claim (just as they do with Gruden) he couldn't recruit...I'm sorry, folks, but NFL experience/success has a way of convincing recruits more than an up and comer in the College ranks.

Kids want to get to the league. The coaches can not only institute an NFL style program, along with a number of their coaching colleagues in the NFL, but they have connections to staff in the league, and that can only help come draft day.

I'm sure Gilbride would want to hire some staff with significant recruiting credentials. Jay Graham may well be kept for such reasons, as he is not only a great RB coach, but a fantastic recruiter, too.

Got to bump this thread, as I think he's way overlooked. Has more Superbowl Rings on his fingers than Gruden, and they are very recent, mind you.

Gilbride has been a successful OC everywhere he's ever been (Houston Oilers, Jaguars, and NY Giants), and may very well run the offense like Kiffin did. If Gruden falls through, and Patterson is out of the question, I'd like to at least see him be in the mix. Could be had for half of what is being offered to Gruden, and probably less than what it would take to get Patterson. That means more $$$ available to hire away top level Coordinators.

If this guy, why not Mike McCoy? This guy is a heck of a coach. Will probably get NFL offers this year.

They run identical terminology. Well, McCoy has different protections from his Henning days - his 70s are empty OG dual-read and Gilbride uses 6 man 70s. Not much varies elsewhere. Gilbride has roots all over the run and shoot. Sort of bizarre name though. Average fan doesn't have a clue who Gilbride is. He is a really intelligent guy.

Some you sit around trying to come up with anything to stir the pot, don't you? Maybe he wants to hire Buddy Ryan let him punch him in the head too.

On a serious note, though... if he's got roots with Dan Henning (apparently when he was at Carolina), that could make for a unique and interesting hire. Not to mention that he now has a Peyton connection with the school.

Yep. He's a smart guy. Not sure if he is even remotely interested in CFB though.
