OB play and taking care of the ball , is the key to success in 2023 IMO . Hendon Hooker's 2022 TD - INT ratio was 27 - 2 . Can Joe make the split second decisions and execution required to put up those kind of numbers ? I sure hope so , if so we are looking at another 10+ win regular season and a huge late season match up with Georgia !
Cheering for you Joe !!! GO VOLS !!!

Joe doesn't have to put up 27-2 to be successful. Those numbers are astronomical. Expecting someone to match it is like expecting someone to match Dimagio's hitting streak. Our success will be determined by finding an adequate right tackle.

This is Milton's 3rd season in this offense along with several key guys. So my answer would be coaching development on both sides of the ball.

Milton has to make key plays with his feet, especially on 3rd/4th downs when WRs are covered and the OL breaks down. I was re-watching season highlights from last year, and I had forgotten how many times Hendo pulled a Houdini act under significant pressure in critical situations and escaped the pocket for 10+ yards (similar to how Dobbs used to make something out of nothing on a routine basis). Milton definitely doesn't have the same quickness, burst and agility that HH had --- BUT hopefully another offseason of conditioning will make him a tad quicker...

Some players just have a knack at knowing when to tuck it and run. Hooker, Dobbs, and Holloway (who was often running for his life) were those guys. It’s a sixth sense kind of thing that can’t be learned you have it or you don’t. What Milton has that those guys didn’t is he can fire a dart with just a flick of his wrist. Hopefully he can do that with better accuracy and improve on his progressions. I just don’t think he has the pocket awareness that those aforementioned had.

Agee that is a special talent and Joe does not have the speed and quickness of Hooker but he can, or should be, able to run over people Hooker could not and get extra yardage. Each player has to utilize the talents they have to max and not try to be someone else.

Defense -- Totally agree. O is fine and on a nice trajectory..... We need some more defensive big time plays in big moments (3rd Downs for one).

No worries about offense with Hype. I don't want him/UT to become like OKL and USC, etc.... Where there is a great offensive minded coach that can't get to the gold due to defensive issues his whole career.

Tennessee and third-year head coach Josh Heupel head into the 2023 season with a significant roster imbalance due to what happened to that 2021 recruiting class, from which only four players remain with the program.
Tennessee’s scholarship roster going into the season remarkably includes 31 seniors and 32 freshmen. There are just nine scholarship juniors, and three of those were transfers who joined the Vols in January. The four players remaining from that ill-fated 2021 recruiting class are running back Jaylen Wright, defensive backs Christian Charles and De’Shawn Rucker and offensive tackle Jeremiah Crawford, who signed on National Signing Day in February 2021 when Heupel was just days into the job.

Then there were four – looking back at Tennessee’s nearly-gone 2021 recruiting class (247sports.com)

Falls under the heading of things I did not know

TN was #10 in turnover margin in 2022. It is highly unlikely that Milton is as efficient as Hooker was last year. 27-2 td to int ratio is insane. He’s also not as elusive as Hooker. Hooker was a Houdini as far as ability to evade defenders. Much more elusive than Milton.

Agreed. He's going to have to make that decision much earlier. He just doesn't have the escape ability that Hooker had. Once he's in the open, he's fine. Gotta develop that "fast twitch" out of the gate.

I just don’t think that is something he can develop at this point. It’s like he’s already thinking like a 10 yr veteran in the NFL. But he can improve his ability to see the open man and get him the ball in the tiniest of windows.
