Kiffin is an f'n dick and that's messed up.

With that said, he could have refused. I know Kiffin was (allegedly)threatening to pull his scholarship, but sometimes in life you have to grow up, make your own decisions, and weigh your options. Do I want to be healthy and find another way to finish school or do I want to keep my scholarship at the risk of brain damage? He chose brain damage. It's really sad and I feel bad for him but he had a choice. Hopefully the injury isn't permanent because what good is that scholarship you played for if you have mental problems. Then again, it also says "Baucham was a backup defensive back at USC in 2009 and 2010, but was ruled academically ineligible for the 2011 season". So, sounds like his scholarship was going to waste anyways, at least in 2011.

I'm not trying to sound unsympathetic, but define "forced". If someone says they will give you ice cream but you don't want to do what they're asking and eventually you give in and do what they're asking so you can get the ice cream... you weren't forced to do anything. You just wanted the ice cream and were willing to do what it took to get it. Obviously a scholarship is worth a lot more than ice cream, but you get the idea. In reality, he wasn't forced to do anything. He was given an ultimatum and he made the decision. Again, Kiffin is a giant p.o.s. for doing what he did but "forced" is excessive. "Forced" would be if Kiffin drug his ass up and down the field. Obviously, Kiffin isn't capable of that. My opinion probably sounds really crappy but it's also kind of crappy if you can sue someone because you made a decision to trade your health for a scholarship(even though you weren't passing). And yes, it's even more crappy that Kiffin would yank his scholarship for not going back out. So, in no way am I defending Kiffin. I think that's one of the scummiest things I've ever heard a college coach do. I'm just not going to refer to it as being "forced". Forced is when you do something against your will with no decision in the matter. He had a decision though. jmo, albeit sounding horrible.

Neither the SDS piece, nor the AP report that it cites, mention whether or not he was medically cleared to play. The AP report says he "was ill before the game." Why wasn't he checked out? If he was still showing concussion symptoms, how'd he ever make it onto the field?

If the advice of doctors was ignored (and given NCAA rules, I don't know how it could have been) or Baucham was kept from being seen by doctors on that particular day, then Kiffin should not only pay up, he should never be allowed to coach again. And I'm saying that as someone who has been very pleased with his coaching so far.

There are some major details missing from this story.

Lane will be Florida's next coach. That guy could fall into a blanket of shi* and end up in one of the best jobs in the country.

I hate that prick.

He's getting a lot of credit for coaching 5* talent at Bama. Hell I could tell Sims to hand it to Henry and throw to #9 every 4th play.

I agree

I don't like Lane Kiffin at all, but my dad taught me that "whats right is right and whats fair is fair" and that if I always tried to treat people by that standard then I would be ok.

So like you I want to see some real evidence that this kid was "forced to play" I just find that hard to believe and the fact that his prior concussion was 2 months earlier makes me think that he had been cleared by the team doctors.
I just don't see any coach forcing a kid to play without being cleared first by the medical staff.

If the kid wasn't able to make a sound decision at the time, then perhaps, coerced would be a better word than forced. Either way, this has to make Haden and Kiffin very uncomfortable.
