Kiffin, during a Wednesday interview with SiriusXM College Sports Nation, was asked whether he would talk to his assistants the same way Saban talked to him during his three-year tenure at Alabama.

His answer may have provided a little more insight into their relationship.

"No, that's not really how I do it. (Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy) knows about those," Kiffin said. "Those things come up, and everybody has different ways of dealing with them. Did Saban bring in Kiffin to let him to his thing, or did Saban bring in Kiffin for the specific purpose of running a particular offense? Particularly last year, where they ran more spread-type concepts that Saban traditionally is more uncomfortable with.

Both. Kiffin was not the master of the read-option when he came to Bama. He and Saban agreed it was time to take better advantage of the college rules. Coach Saban gave Kiffin a lot of leeway in his control as he does with other coaches on his staff. But I think it's also safe to say that no HC says quality control like coach Saban.
