Lane is learning first-hand something Phil Fulmer could've shared with him two decades ago: It ain't the Xs and Os, it's the Jimmies and Joes.

Lane thought all along it was his genius. Didn't realize it was mostly Pete Carroll and Nick Saban's recruiting.

Did you expect FAU to be a powerhouse less than a year in?

It's both the Xs and Os and the Jimmies and Joes. Coaching alone doesn't win and talent alone doesn't win. Kiffin is a very good offensive mind, to deny that is silly.

I expected him to lose. And am enjoying every minute of it.

No actually he's one of the better offensive minds and quarterback coaches in the country.

FAU starts the season against Navy and Wisconsin and this yahoo OP thinks it somehow speaks about a HC in his first season at a bottom feeder school. Board gets dumber every day.

I have a feeling I'll be telling that story because I was a sophomore and was wondering what all the yelling was going on outside my dorm LOL

But you aren't wrong, time to just forget about ol' what's his name

At a school like FAU a coach doesn't have to move mountains you just have to go to a bowl game to prove you are good coach.

Quit main excuses for first year coaches . They agreed to sign and get paid to coach the team. Kiffin sucks , enough said.

Hard to know for sure who it was. It's one of those phrases that suddenly got popular in about a dozen places at once.

Phil Fulmer at Tennessee was definitely one of those places.

But apparently the first time anyone saw it in print (from what I could find) was a 1991 Los Angeles Times article, "Champion Irvine Tries to Focus on Road Ahead," quoting a coach named Henigan (maybe Terry Henigan), in this way:
“We have a saying, It’s not the X’s and O’s, it’s the Jimmys and the Joes,’” Henigan said.

So who knows. Only thing I know for sure is, Fulmer was fond of saying it. :)

Man is a good coach. I regret the spot the he put us in, but in a way we brought it on ourselves with the we treated Fulmer. Point being Kiffin had us within a blocked kick of a historic win.
