A conversation Tennessee men’s basketball coaches started kicking around two weeks before the Vols lost to N.C. State became more pressing after the Wolfpack left Thompson-Boling Arena with a win last Wednesday. The starting rotation is being examined. Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin’s comments after the fourth loss of the season made it even more clear.

“It’s more than just talent,” Martin said after the 65-58 defeat to N.C. State. “It’s got to be chemistry, flow, togetherness, finding ways to win games, accepting roles ...”

He continued.

“The chemistry has to get better, as far as the flow and execution. I don’t think there’s a lack of chemistry as far as relationships. There’s a difference. The guys get along great. They all spend time together. The chemistry on the floor — knowing where guys are, knowing how guys want the ball, those type of things.”

Some of Martin's related post-game quotes about his definition of "chemistry" just leave me scratching my head:

(On if there will be more set plays when the chemistry gets better)
"Oh yeah, you'll look at set plays, but again with set plays, you've got to be able to know them. You've got to be able to execute and know them when there's multiple set plays."

(On what point in the season is "crunch time" for team chemistry)
"You do it every day. You work towards it every day. It's just a matter of when they get it. As a coach, we put situations in for them to get ready. It's just a matter of when they get in the flow and they feel better together. It's one thing for us as coaches to concentrate on finding that chemistry and flow. Even then, you start a certain lineup. You've got to have certain lineups and rotations coming off the bench and being able to play well together."

(On adjusting lineups)
"I think we'll look at all the guys just to make sure you flow. The whole key is getting off to a good start. For me, we have to set a good tone defensively earlier and let your offense flow and have patience on offense, execute, having space. At the end of the day, you have to be able to make shots from the perimeter on teams that are sagging like that and collapsing."

Seriously, to make motion offense work you need guys with high basketball IQ.
Continued problems with spacing, lack of movement, shot selection, etc, scream, we don't have them.
And of course a lot of that is coaching.

We really don't need to jack up 24 threes if were only gonna hit 3 that is a .38 points per shot attempt really ugly.

But CCM says that the players just need to make shots. That is an efficient offensive product we are watching out there. :)

It's a common them in our wins verse losses. When we lose our 3 points shot attempts are about 50% higher than when we win, that's no coincidence.

Bryan Cranston is free to assistant coach chemistry.
He's not doing the Walter White thing anymore.

I was half way through the second season and loving it until someone told me the ending :(

It's worth watching even if you do know the ending. I'm thinking of watching the whole series all over again. TV doesn't get much better than Breaking Bad.
