You probably know more about these guys than I do . . . . but I don't see how you can make an evaluation like that when Roper has been stuck trying to sell Ole Miss and Kentucky football? I doubt there are many recruiters in America who can do that.

If he came from Kenlucky, how good can he be? Lets hope we have better success with an Ole Miss staff than they did.

So what is your impression of him?

I'm confused. Didn't Coach Cut have a 45-29 record for .603 winning percentage and that included a 4-1 bowl record and the two new guys were part of that successful staff? :dunno:

Roper was only at UK for 1 season, but I thought that he did a great job getting Pulley, a true freshman, ready to play SEC ball. Pulley isn't a dropback passer, more of an evasive/make your own play QB, but over the course of the season, I really saw his technique improve a lot.

UK's 1st string QB, Andre Woodson, really matured under him. In 2004, Woodson couldn't seem to develop a feel for how long he should stay in the pocket, getting sacked way too much. Coach Roper seemed to help him with that skill a lot this last season. Of course, we had no o-line this year, so Roper's job was very difficult.

The kids seem to like him a lot, and don't forget that Roper attended the funeral of the UK recruit from Memphis who passed away last week. Our loss is your gain, imo.

FWIW, when UK hired Roper, the Manning family went on record to say how much they admired and respected his abilities.

I love reading some of the posts on this website. They always seem to make me laugh. We have so many posters on here that are so informed that college coaches all over the country must call them for advice. You posters that are talking about how bad of a hire this is, well my question to you is when have you last coached with this guy? When have you last spoken with a player that was coached by him? When have you last EVEN TALKED TO THE GUY? I'm guessing your answer to every one of those questions is 'no' so keep you UN-insightful and UN-informed opinions to yourself so that you don't get on here and sound like a idiot. Of course that is your right (to post on here and sound like an idiot) but I am just trying to save some face for you.

If everyone only posted their opinions of which they had first hand knowledge of then we wouldn't have very many posts. I for one think you can form an opinion on someone based on what we read in the various media outlets, looking at the past jobs a guy has had and look at how well those teams have done while he has been there. Don't you think a fan could make a fair assessment based on these things?

I wonder why David and Phillip didn't bring you in for the interview. Sounds like you could have helped.

I think the main question and concern I have with whoever takes the new position is: Will CPF sway from the conservative approach to his offensive philosophy and allow these newer coaches to implement more of their own offensive strategies as Patrick mentioned in an earlier post? As we all know, RS was not in control of offensive decision-making and yet he took responsibility for the offensive woes. Let's face it guys, there is a time to be conservative and then there is a time to "open it up". "Playing not to lose" is a strategy that CPF has been lucky with in the past. I hope we develop a play to win strategy from now on. Whether we like it or not, the "powers that be" who rate the Top 20 teams week in and week out, use final scores as a factor in their ratings. I think it is "humane" to not intentionally run up the score on a team, but at the same time you have to be concerned with ratings. I never encouraged my players to intentionally run up a score. At the same time, I never told them to not score either. I hope CPF takes a slightly different approach with his offensive philosophy and allow his coaches to do the same.

Well no matter how you feel about the Roper hire, it's now official. So let's give him a Big Orange welcome and hope that he ends up being a solid addition to the program.

Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer completed his coaching staff for the 2006 season Friday by naming Kurt Roper an assistant coach for running backs.
"I'm very excited about being in Knoxville because I had a great experience when I was here before," Roper said. "I enjoyed working with Coach Fulmer and it's where I got my start, where my base knowledge of football began. I feel fortunate to be back."
