Brent Jolly article from the Chattanooga Times Free Press (11/10/05).......

Jolly’s effort pays off with Gwynne
By David Uchiyama Staff Writer

Suzanne Gwynne fixed a fresh pitcher of iced tea for her special guests.
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head basketball coach John Shulman and assistant coach Brent Jolly arrived on time for the official in-home visit.
They were interested in persuading Matt Gwynne Jr., to play basketball for the Mocs next season and answering any questions Suzanne or Matt’s father had about the program, the school and the city.
Their recruiting pitch worked, through the staff effort spearheaded by Jolly, who made the first in-home visits of his career this past summer.
"He was very organized, and had all the facts that I, as mom, was very interested in hearing," Suzanne Gwynne said of Jolly. "He was very pleasant and honest, and I can tell when somebody isn’t."
Gwynne, a 6-foot-9 post player at the Christ School in North Carolina, is expected to be one of four recruits to sign with UTC during the early signing period which runs through next Wednesday.
NCAA rules prevent Shulman from commenting on players until their paperwork arrives in his office.
"I don’t know if any of our recruits are all because of me," Jolly said. "It’s the whole program. It’s not me and the guys I sign, it’s the team that recruits players."
Jolly has a contrasting demeanor to the man he replaced in the offices along the fourth floor of McKenzie Arena. Jolly is calm and relaxed, almost impossible to excite or anger. "Excitement for him is getting to eat a Kit-Kat bar," Shulman said.
Former associate head coach Charlton Young woke up with a smile on his face, his volume button set on high, and a perpetually positive outlook.
As Shulman explained during a media luncheon on Wednesday, their recruiting styles are different as well.
"Charlton was a Vegas guy," Shulman said. "He’s flash and dash, bright lights. Jolly is more of a grinder.
"Charlton could get something done in one phone call that might take (Jolly) 10 calls. But Jolly will make those calls."
Young’s exuberance, coaching talents, and — most importantly — his recruiting skills helped him land an assistant coaching job at Georgia Tech.
"In years before, my reputation has been as a recruiter, but I’m getting to the point where people recognize me as a basketball coach," Young said. "Recruiting is so important in this profession that when you can do that well, you can stand out."
Young, Jolly and current assistant coach Gary Abner put together the class that will take the floor Saturday night for the Mocs in an exhibition game against Campbellsville, which could prove in the long run to be one of the most talented classes of the last 20 years at UTC.
"At UTC, your objective is to get players who are league better than your conference and I think we did that," Young said. "Make no bones about it — those kids are talented, and anybody with two eyes who watches basketball will see that in time."
Time will also tell if Gwynne and the 2006 class turns out even better thanks to Jolly, Abner and Shulman.
