Glory Johnson and Taber Spani each scored 20-plus points to lead the Lady Vols past Carson-Newman, 110-66, in the teams first exhibition of the 2010-11 season.

Nice tune up. Defense struggled some. But, Bjorklund, Can, Brewer and Baugh didn't play. Good to see Simmons on the court. She is fast.

My take on the game last night. Spani and Strick were on fire last night. Manning had a rough night but stepped it up midway through the second half and did some good things. Glory looked more under control but there was some hesitation on her part when shooting. It appeared she was making a decision and not really going with the flow. I keep hearing how Bass has improved, but I didn't see it. She looks the same to me. Kamiko had some ticky tack fouls called on her which limited her. She has great potential. Simmons hasn't seen a shot she doesn't like. She's not shy about throwing it up there. She is going to be a good one, just needs to get the nerves under control. A couple of games and she will be fine. Smallbone is what she is. When she has time to think about her shot it's a clanger, when she doesn't, it's usually string music. The whole team appeared a step slow on defense. They gave up too many drives down the middle. That will be corrected when we get our post players in the game, so I'm not too worried about that. The team looked good, a little rough, but the potential is there.

One game suspension due to being late to class which the teacher counted as being absent from class. Kamiko will sit out the next game for the same infraction.

Couple of things. I thought the refs took away the flow of the game at the very start by calling fouls that could be called on every play. I don't know why they did that in an exhibition game....but I thought it may have affected the players some. Simmons caught some really ridiculous fouls as she first came in....and Johnson got called for a non-contact hand in the air... not even close to the shooter.

2)I thought while watching I had never seen a freshman other than a post player get so many shots (as Simmons) without Pat or someone jerking them out of the game....so...I wondered if that was a change in Pat's attitude or... if she possibly had told Simmons to take her shots in the exhibition games and Simmons knew it was permitted....OR...is Simmons already good enough for Pat (and coaches) to let her go off on her own? Man, she is just so quick...LV's have needed that speed for awhile, IMO.
