Rutgers and Texas are solid but I was hoping to see Duke,Penn State, UCLA, Maryland, Baylor or UNC. The last 2 I know will never happen

Maryland will not schedule Tennessee as long as Brenda Frese is coaching. Period! She still isn't over CP turning her down multiple times (even after being at Tennessee for a year.)

UNC won't be back on the schedule while T'ea and Diamond are here. Georgia Tech doesn't want Tennessee coming into the Atlanta hotbed for recruiting (even though we already have three Georgia girls on the team, possibly one more.)

Duke has turned down Tennessee every time we have tried to schedule a series, preferring to play UConn. That series is in it's last year, and I would not expect for it to be renewed. I wouldn't be surprised if Tennessee was scheduled in the next few years.

Lots of teams now have conference networks to broadcast their games, so coming to Tennessee isn't a necessity as it used to be. Also, with our tough conference, a tough OOC schedule isn't as important. I do agree that one or two more "tough" games would be beneficial, but teams have to agree to play Tennessee. It's not a one-way street.

Fans want a tough schedule, but when we lose, the complaints begin.
UConn has done fine with a softer schedule.

The NCAA committee looks at wins and loses way more than RPI...

Tennessee's non conference schedule is better than some that I've seen from other schools. Notre dame,Stanford,Texas and Rutgers are solid and three of those opponents we face on the road. We will still be in the state of Georgia I mean we are in the the same conference as uga after all.

The depth of talent that has developed over the last 10 years in women's basketball means that the schedule we have now is a lot tougher, than say, if we had the exact same schedule 10 years ago. The Point is, although this schedule is not loaded with "big name" programs, it will be a very competitive one.

The SEC is plenty tough enough were always in the top five in SOS. Playing Notre Dame, Rutgers, and Texas on the road is plenty tough enough. We have a key home game with Stanford. If we can go 3 and 1 in those games and win all the others we'll go into the SEC in good shape with a lot of players getting time against lesser opponents.

But this team has shown it can play down to the level of their opponent, which could lead to bad habits. If we step on teams throat and dominate, its fine if we get a drop in level of play it will not be good. Consistency!

At a glance, that looks pretty soft. Granted that Notre Dame, Stanford, Texas and Rutgers are fine, but Lipscomb, Carson Newman College, Oral Roberts, Winthrop, and Saint Francis (PA) seem pretty light. Personally, I'd like to see some more mid to major programs we've seen in the past like MTSU, Georgetown, Virginia, and Georgia Tech in lieu of some of those light ones.

One of the hallmarks of our schedules has been that even if we don't play a top 25 ranked team, we usually face decent teams in terms of RPI like top 50 teams and top 75 teams as opposed to the bottom 250 plus. I haven't researched all those teams, so maybe they are better than I'm getting them credit for, but maybe not.

And most of the teams listed above either won there conference championship or made the ncaa tournament. Tradition games Notre Dame, Stanford, Texas, Rutgers, personally I would like to see 5-7 quality games against proven performers.

And to grow the game, the brand of lady vols is strong, so I like the fact they are playing up and coming programs, and fellow former lady vols, who now coach. I just want to see athletes on the court that matches our own, good games. Blowout are not going to grow the game either, and that is the perception from outsiders.

  1. ND,
  2. Stanford,
  3. USC or UCLA
  4. Texas
  5. Rutgers
  6. Virginia or FSU
  7. Penn State or Purdue

What is your ideal schedule?

Wasn't St. Francis added at the last minute when UNC dropped out? UNC would have made a tougher SOS, but.... Isn't Winthrop Jodi's team? We've always supported Lady Vols who have gone on to coach at other schools. And Carson Newman is a tradition. Pat started it and the game means a lot to CN for several reasons. Lipscomb and Oral Roberts maybe could have been filled with a little tougher teams, but...overall I think they did a pretty good job on the schedule. The UNC/St. Francis was the big hit, and we can't make them play us if they don't want to. Personally I would love to get Baylor to return to the head to head. Wishful thinking. I guess.

Witchita State is Adams team and the Lipscomb coach use to be a grad-assistant turned assistant coach for Summitt. Also the Penn coach was a teammate of Coach Law in her Globtrotter days, so that could be how Penn landed on the schedule.

IMO the schedule is about right. The program needs to exorcise some recent onset fragility before it schedules a Final Four-type foe night in and night out. Memorable debacles at Chattanooga and Missouri; unsettling homecourt collapses against LSU, Notre Dame, and Kentucky; unseized NCAA opportunities against Louisville and Maryland--all of these come to mind resoundingly.

We're "back" on paper, but we've got some work to do between the lines before the schedule becomes too ambitious. This team needs to pursue unyielding dominance through this regular season and specifically make the NCAA Tournament its resume for future prominence.
