Lady Vols soccer wins shortened game over Florida Atlantic 2-0​



Tennessee soccer defeated Florida Atlantic 2-0 in a game that ended 14 minutes early due to weather.

The Lady Vols (5-1-1) win their final non-conference game before the start of SEC play on Friday. Goals from Nylyn Bartholomew and Jordan Fusco were the difference between them and the Owls (3-3-2)

The Lady Vols put pressure on early, recording four shots in the first 20 minutes. Their first goal came in the 22nd minute, as Bartholomew scored off of a rebound from a corner kick. Ally Brown was credited with an assist on the goal.



Just seven minutes later, a through ball from Kameron Simmonds found Fusco, who finished the shot past Florida Atlantic goalkeeper Blythe Braun. The Lady Vols went into halftime up two goals.

Tennessee continued to dominate play in the second half, recording three shots compared to Florida Atlantic’s one. In the 76th minute, with a lightning strike in the area, the game was delayed. The contest never resumed, and the Lady Vols earned the win.



Once again, head coach Joe Kirt made a goalkeeper substitution at halftime, as Ally Zazzara relieved Abby Reisz. Reisz did not face a shot in her 45 minutes of play, while the only shot recorded by the Owls in the second half went wide of goal.

Due to Jaida Thomas’ continued absence, Simmonds continued to play in a central attacking role for the majority of the game. When Kate Runyon and Simmonds were both playing, Simmonds moved to a wider position.

The Lady Vols finished the game with 12 shots, 10 of which were on target. Tennessee also earned seven corner kicks compared to just one for the Owls.

Tennessee begins SEC play at home on Friday with a meeting against Arkansas. The Razorbacks enter Knoxville on a two-game losing streak, but both losses came against ranked opposition.

Lady Vols Dominate Possession, Take 2-0 Win at FAU​


BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Lady Vols closed out their non-conference schedule with a 2-0 win at Florida Atlantic on Sunday.

First-half goals by juniors Nolyn Bartholomew and Jordan Fusco fueled the Tennessee (5-1-1) victory. Sophomores Ally Brownand Kameron Simmonds earned assists on the day. The UT defense was stout, holding FAU (3-3-2) without a shot until the 75thminute. The game went into a weather delay in the 76th minute that extended beyond the time limit for resuming play, so the 2-0 score stood as final.

“It was great to pick up a road win as we wrap up the non-conference portion of our season," said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt.

"Our team's commitment to defending has been impressive to start the year, and we must continue to take pride in our pressing and counter-pressing entering league play. In possession, our players have been tremendous and continue to gain poise and confidence on the ball each time out. Through that confidence, we have been dominant in creating chances and scoring goals. Overall, we have been very pleased with our team's approach, energy and physicality each time we have stepped on the field."

Bartholomew logged the first game-winner of her career against the Owls, entering in the 22nd minute and immediately connecting on a corner kick by Brown to beat Lexi Gonzalez near post.

Seven minutes later, Fusco scored her second goal of the season, running onto a ball played into the box by Simmonds and sliding it past the FAU keeper from 12 yards out.

The score remained 2-0 through the break, with UT out-shooting the Owls 9-0.

In the 62nd minute, redshirt-sophomore Jenna Stayart played a ball across the box to graduate Nayeli Diaz, who got a head on it but couldn't bring it down on frame.

Two minutes later, Fusco nearly added a second goal on the day, beating a defender before ripping a shot from 20 yards out but missing wide left.

Gonzalez made an excellent save in the 75th minute, diving to knock away a Jenna Stayart shot headed for the far post. A minute later, the game was delayed due to lightning, and Tennessee took the 2-0 win.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols will open SEC play at home, welcoming #7 Arkansas to Regal Stadium for a 7 p.m. ET matchup on Friday.

SIMMONDS DISHING: Sophomore Kameron Simmonds, who leads the team in goals with six on the season, has tallied assists in the last two contests. Her 14 points on the season leads the SEC, and her six goals ties for first in the conference with Jordyn Rhodes of Kentucky.

CREATING CHANCES: The Lady Vols outshot the Owls 12-1 and took seven corners to their one. Through the last five contests, UT has out-shot opponents 107-24 and taken 45 corner kicks while limiting the opposition to just seven.

SCORING THREATS ABOUND: With the second goal of her career, Nolyn Bartholomew became the ninth Lady Vol to register a goal during the 2023 campaign.

No Hennessey today--I assume yet another injury.
Thomas didn't play and apparently her hairline fracture--of what?---is not healed and who knows how more much she might
play this year, if at all. A ridiculous number of injuries.

Both of our goals today seemed a little cheesy--by which I mean they seemed more lucky than good.

Kirt sounds optimistic about the team. We'll find out next game if he's got a grip on UT's performance level--as a team and individually--or if he's still
suffering from the delusions that clearly afflicted him last year.

Yea, the Thomas and Katz losses are significant, the others less so, though Chatterton could have helped us this year along with Barr, who is a talented freshman. That said, we still have enough talent to be a good soccer team and win SEC matches. And let's keep in mind that there's
no such thing as a fully healthy women's soccer team; everybody is dealing with, or will soon, with serious injuries to one or more players. The only thing worse than having a bad coach is having a coach who is not good but does just enough each year to hang onto his/her job. Let's see what Kirt and the staff can do in the SEC.

LVFL Mackenzie George faced off against another LVFL Katie Cousins in a match today in Iceland.

Not sure how serious the injury but Katie went off in the 13th minute.
