A quick own goal by Lipscomb and a strike from Kate Runyon in the first half were pivotal for Tennessee soccer in its match against the Bisons on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Vols put on an impressive showing at Regal Stadium with a 3-0 win over the Lipscomb Bisons (1-1-1).
From the opening kickoff, it looked as if the Bisons had momentum out of the gate. With an aggressive start, they were seeking to put an end to Tennessee’s (3-1-0) sweep of other in-state opponents — Chattanooga and East Tennessee State. By attacking the ball and possessing it well, it looked like the Bisons were going to give the Lady Vols a rough Sunday afternoon.
The momentum didn’t last long. In the sixth minute of the game, Reese Mattern had the ball in the box and a good look at the goal. Mattern’s shot deflected off a Lipscomb defender, which redirected the shot out of the arms of Kaïna Cesar and into the back of the net.
This sixth-minute goal proved crucial, as it gave Tennessee a breath of fresh air and allowed them to play their game.
The early goal was also one of the most important goals of the season, snapping the Lady Vols’ five game streak of not having a first-half goal — a streak that extended all the way back to late last season.
From that moment forward, it was the Lady Vols’ game.
Controlling the ball well, the Lady Vols were able to keep the Bisons out of striking distance. The Tennessee defense stood tall, negating any shot for the Bisons to claw back into the game. Lipscomb failed to communicate well, sending the ball wide on passes, either into the sideline or to a Tennessee defender.
As Lipscomb attempted to regain their footing, the Lady Vols landed another crucial blow.
Luciana Latino saw an opportunity from near the midfield line, sending the ball toward Jaida Thomas and Runyon in the penalty box. Runyon found the ball in traffic right in front of the goal and booted it in to extend the Lady Vols’ lead to two.
The first half was the Lady Vols’ best of the season. Heading into the second half, Tennessee had already taken control by putting up eight shots, two of which were on goal. This put them in the driver’s seat of the game for the second half.
Defender Ally Brown credits this quick start to the Lady Vols mentality.
“I feel like it was a mentality, we need to come out and put games away,” Brown said. “So just coming out with that mentality, that first half, the first five minutes, we need to pound teams.”
Brown even notched her own goal in the second half — the first of her career — to make the final score 3-0.
Head coach Joe Kirt also highlighted the importance of Tennessee’s mentality and their ability to play with confidence.
“I don’t think it’s anything different,” Kirt said. “It’s just continuing to define who we are and be more confident in what we’re doing.”
