Some may not care, but for those who do I thought this was interesting considering we could have possibly had 3 starting true freshmen at the linebacker positions.
USC got a glimpse at its defensive future Tuesday afternoon when senior middle linebacker Chris Galippo went down with an injured right shoulder.
Galippo missed the latter portion of practice, thrusting freshman Lamar Dawson into the first-team spotlight.
Coach Lane Kiffin said Galippo’s injury isn’t severe, so the future should remain on hold for a while. But Kiffin likes what he has seen so far from Dawson, a four-star recruit from Junction City, Ky.
Dawson had five tackles during Monday night’s scrimmage, tying for third most on the team. Just as important, he was unfazed by the glare of the Coliseum lights.
“Most of the guys at this point barely can line up once they get in that scenario,” Kiffin said. “He does not look like a true freshman out there, which is what we want. That’s what the really good guys in the past have done.”
Kiffin said it’s too early to make definite decisions about the depth chart. But Dawson, who’s wearing the fabled No. 55 jersey, had taken the vast majority of the second-team reps before Galippo got hurt.
Galippo (Servite High) landed on his shoulder after making a diving attempt to intercept a pass. He had an ice pack on it afterward but didn’t seem to be in great discomfort.
