A coaching transition is hard enough on a team, bringing in a new coach to suffer through the remaining player reductions would mean that fewer high-caliber coaches would be interested in the job as their record (future) will directly be hog-tied by their roster. I firmly believe that he is only being retained due to the sanctions and scholarship losses that USC still suffers. As those near their end, he will be swiftly replaced.

He is a good recruiter and that might help offset the loss of some scholarship players.

Last year he cost Barkley millions and he achieved a feat almost as rare as winning a BCS crown: starting the season ranked #1 and then finishing un-ranked with a walloping by a Georgia Tech team who got beat by MTSU.

He is finished, it is only a matter of time.

As mad as I was when he ran out of town on us, that was certainly a blessing in disguise for us in the long run. We wouldn't even care about Lane if a suitable replacement not named Dooley had been named HC after that fateful event.

Why is Lane Kiffin still mentioned in the football forum, though? It'd be cool to see his name as LITTLE as possible on here. JMO.

it never ceases to amaze me how some otherwise knowledgeable people continue to insist that kiffy is a "great" coach. he is a great salesman, that is for sure, which fits right in to his recruiting skill set.

it also never ceases to amaze me how UT managed to completely blow two coaching hires back to back. i just hope it does not turn out to be a three-peat.

Why? Investment into their belief and too proud to see the truth, thats why.

I can see a scenario where Pat Hayden brings in Jack Del Rio. He's an NFL guy with ties to USC.

It won't. I know some people don't like Hart, but he is a 180 from the bumbling idiot Hamilton was. He couldn't get a baseball coach worth anything much less football!

He ends up as a Dallas Cowboys QB coach -- along with the rest of their loser position coaches

He isn't a great coach.

That isn't sour grapes, that is a numbers evaluation.

Like you mentioned, some people get caught up in the subjectivity of coaching (he's so handsome, or he's so energetic, or he's got the right name and lineage). Kiff is actually on the order of Dooley (a rare feat) insomuch as his ability to impact a roster negatively.

Don't think so. Pat Haden probably would have never hired Kiffin in the first place, don't think he will hire a Kiffin clone

True that. The only reason Lane got the job is because of his USC ties and his dad.

We better hope that Lane doesn't get fired because they would in no way hire someone who is not a splash. They would hire a big name. Definitely not Franklin. He is going to be put to shame soon. He's hoping to have a good year this year so he can jump ship like he always does, but no way he ends up at USC.
