This thread comes from a debate in the Big 10 thread. I'm not talking about largest alum totals but who overall fan bases. Who do you all think are the big ones? I'm guessing Notre Dame,Texas,Ohio State,UGA are the big ones. I want to say we would be top 5-8 range. Am I wrong? I know I probably left out a big one but can't think of them...lol

Yeah, you've been living in east Tennessee too long to think that

Depends on how one defines a fan. Truly devoted and passionate or inclusive of fairweather and in it for the halftime show types. USCs fanbase can be giant or middlin.

If you're including fair weather fans and the like then I'd have to think Notre Dame is without question #1

i'm not sure UGA makes the top 5

cause there's still USC, Michigan, Alabama, and maybe even UF

Texas and tOSU are large schools that have a large alumni base. ND has a vastly smaller alumni base, but millions of front runner/sidewalk fans.

Jut depend on what you mean by fanbase. Total alumni or alumni plus sidewalk fans?

I tend to see mostly Penn State gear when I'm out in various parts of the country. I also spot a lot of Ohio State and Michigan gear anywhere I'm at.

No pun intended, but Texas is by far the largest cash cow in college sports at the moment.

SEC teams seem to have extremely large fan bases that are only in the south. I see various Big Ten gear on a near-daily basis here, in Seattle (there once a month or so) and in SF/LA (in each of them once or twice a year). On the flip side, I hardly, if ever, see SEC gear with the occasional exception of Florida.

I see a lot of Ohio State and Michigan fans in Nashville, but most of them are displaced.

Outside of the SEC teams it's mostly those 2 and Notre Dame.

I don't see USC as a top 5 honestly....outside of Cali and a few West Coast states I don't see many USC fans outside of alums which without looking I'm not sure what those totals would be....

As far as merchandise sells UNC is probably up there also...not sure how that ranks them as "fan base"

Ohio State/ND are the top... Texas is right up there too... then Penn State/Michigan/UF are slightly behind.. then it's pretty much just a cluster of teams like UT/UGA/UNC/etc.

I'd say Florida has a large, fairly well-committed fanbase in addition to the BW'ers.

Same goes for FSU. Miami is the east coast's USC. When they're in the national title conversation, they're trendy to root for, pull gargantuan TV numbers and you see their logo on t-shirts and sweaters nation-wide. When they're playing .500 ball, they're not even on the cover of their local sports pages.

I put UGA in there because seems like regardless of what state we travel to you always see Dawg fans.

i'd be very surpised if SC hit the top-10 nationally. In the pac-10 it probably ranks:

1) USC
2) UW
3) UCLA (even more bandwaggon than SC though)
4) Cal (travels a lot better than UCLA, but UCLA has more season tickets)
5) Oregon
6) Arizona State
7) Oregon State
8) Arizona
9) Stanford
10) WSU

As Saban said... there are huge numbers of displaced Nor'easters. Most move to the South and on the West Coast.

Not many people are leaving the South because most can make a comparable salary but have a significantly smaller Cost-of-Living... not to mention no snow which most of the displaced families I've talked to are extremely happy about that fact.
