Last Booms Day?

Meh, it had gotten progressively worse with Star 102.1 was the driving radio station behind it and it was starting to get long in the tooth anyway.

I assume the attempt at selling tickets finally killed it off.

I honestly think they have an chance to do something different and better...hopefully they can do it.

It used to be fun. Too many people for an area that's too congested.

This tradition didn't have a problem until this blithering idiot Kim Bumpas took over as President of Visit Knoxville.

So Visit Knoxville states this as their mission:

“Our mission is to solicit, host and/or produce conventions or events that bring visitation that utilize hotel rooms to grow the tax base and marketing funds. Boomsday does not achieve this mission,” Bumpas said during a news conference Tuesday.

If that is true, why were they ever in charge of something that is never going to be more than a locals only kind of event?

Real talk though, whoever was in charge of Booms Day along with Mike Hamilton missed a perfect opportunity a few years ago to have Booms Day and UT football be broadcast on ESPN as one of the kickoff games of the season (like 2004 vs UNLV). I think ESPN wanted an annual Sunday night game to open the year.

This is a major event in Knoxville. I would think their will be sponsors jump on board to keep Boomsday going, jmo.

It is the ULTIMATE sponge event.

Thousands of people go (although their attendance estimates were laughably high), but almost no one spends a dime.

I'm hoping they figure out how to put on a good festival and/or concert series instead.

Granted, this is where my mind drifts to a fantasy world where there's a nice downtown, multi-use baseball stadium where that stupid convention center is sitting...but I digress.

Boomsday should be saved! I have been attending since 1990 and love every second of it. The official ringing in of football season, the home opener and Boomsday!

Given the size of Knoxville, I'm befuddled this event is going away.
