Neither Indiana nor Iowa are going to request permission to speak to Coach Pearl. IU has a list that includes Steve Alford, Randy Wittman, and Billy Gillespie. There is support in some corners for Rick Majerus, John Calipari, and Tom Crean. However, I'd be shocked if it's not one of the first three. If Iowa has a void to fill, their list will be Greg McDermott, Dana Altman, Chris Lowery, and Rob Jeter. As an aside, if Tubby Smith does go to the NBA, the Kentucky job will be Cal's for the taking.

Just trying to alleviate the fears of some of the overly nervous folks on this board.

I'm pretty overly nervous most of the time.

Obviously. I wonder how fast you opened this thread when you saw that.....

The fact that he signed a fat raise and contract extension that is awaiting approval by the prez would negate any fears that he would be mentioned in anyone's coaching needs.

The fact that the Prez hasn't yet signed the dang thing irks me.

In a somewhat related note. I have been surprised to see a lot of letters in the Chattanooga paper's regular Op-Ed page that were highly critical of the coach being given such a high dollar deal after just one year. Folks seem convinced that that is their taxes at work, and are genuinely ticked.

Such a quick substantial raise after just one season is sketchy. It was pretty much a given we'd play up this year after a positive coaching change. That's why UT has had such a high bill buying out BB coaching contracts over the past years. Good first season or 2, then fizzle, then fire, then payout. Besides, Pearl does't come out of my taxes.

First of all, greetings. I'm not a big believer in starting a whole new topic to say hello so I'll do it here. I come in peace. :D I have a buddy that posts here (sparta vol) and thought I would join in.

As far as Tubby leaving for the NBA. That would probably be every Kentucky fans dream but I doubt that is happening.

This article would seem to suggest that he is staying:

That article would also suggest that if he can't handle some 19 year old college students, he certainly won't be able to handle 19+ year old millionaire's with even bigger ego's.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I first read the NBA talk about Tubby. He's a good coach, but I wonder if he would translate all that well into the NBA.

Welcome to the board.

He's worked with a number of the NBA guys during international tournaments and, to a man, they love the guy. I think he would do a good job in the league. Smart guys like Tubby realize that you deal with NBA guys differently than you do college players.

You're probably right. After I posted that I started thinking about NBA temperments vs. college temperments. College coaches are probably more apt to be more fiery and control freaks because they have to be in dealing with 18-21 year olds.

My mother lives in Fort Lauderdale. I always try to catch a Heat game when I visit her. Kevin O'Neill was in town when he was coaching the Raptors. He told me that the NBA is a better life for a coach. All they really have to concrn themselves with is the game. No booster club meetings, no recruiting, no making sure guys go to class, etc. Sure, you have to manage egos, but that's part of any management position. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of NBA players go about their business in a professional manner.

Ahh..Ft. Lauderdale, I lived there for twenty-two years. It's wet and 40 degrees in knoxville today. Today I envy your Mom, but not on many days. East TN is still God's country.

Not a bad area. The company I work for has a facility in Pompano. I would like to see the Vols and Hurricanes square off again.

I never saw Coach leaving but I guess it's good it's official. :) A buddy of mine is going to be playing for Indiana next year and he was told it was about 95% chance it'll be Gillespie from Texas A&M.

i dont think pearl would ever have any interest in coaching in the big 10, not after the ordeal with illinois 15 years ago. they still whine about that.

That would be a brilliant hire by the IU administration.
