I don't understand. There are no more votes to buy. Everyone being helped by the extensions already votes D.

So you are saying the bulk of our current unemployed are happy not to work, and that there is slack in the labor market? The extension of the benefits makes sense now, it doesn't make sense when we are economically stable. I disagree with the view that those currently unemployed would rather be paid less, lose your skill set, and not work. We're not talking about the habitual benefit seekers in our current environment -- we're talking about real families, with real able workers, unable to find employment.

If you want it done right, make it a zero sum game on the budget. To extend $12B for this, drop $12B in another spot -- but we know that will never happen.

it's FACT that the longer people are paid unemployment benefits and the more they are paid the longer they remain unemployed. forcing them off unemployment forces people to make the hard and many times neccesary decisions (i.e. taking less money, switching industries, retiring).

This is true. You give something away for free long enough, people will adapt to that and become dependent on it and their incentive to work dissolves.

Again, wrong. In a society where self discipline and self pride dominate, you would be correct. But today's society rewards laziness at a ridiculous rate. I was out of work for 9 months. Lost everything I owned. Found a good job paying about half what I had been making before I was out of work. It's called having a work ethic and a sense of pride in my life. Most folks don't have that instilled in them from an early age. They give up easily and discover that by doing so, someone else will take care of them.

Exactly. Unemployment and ALL other forms of government assistance should be temporary. 6 months tops. If you don't have a paying job, your job is looking for a paying job.

This is the Democrat's idea of stimulating the economy for the holiday season.

My wife's ex was fired in May of 2009. He got unemployment until September of this year. He told my wife "I don't have to work. I get paid to stay home. I won't look for a job until unemployment runs out" This guy has 2 college degrees and now works in a chicken processing factory because it was the only job he could find on short notice. (He needed to be employed because it looked better when they went to court in October). I am certain he will quit or do something to get fired as soon as his probationary period there ends so he can go back to sitting on his fanny and collecting a check. Plus it will lower his child support again which he finds humorous.

No offense, but he sounds like a real POS. My sister in law is going through the same situation

my dept is trying to hire right now and are having offers turned down. Unemployment doesn't seem to scare too many people anymore

working in the IT dept (programming, BA and QAA roles). The programming role is pretty specific but the others really aren't. They just require some experience

It's been nearly 20 years since I've had to collect unemployment, but even then, when I was relatively low-skilled and didn't have much of a work history, the amount wasn't enough (barely equivalent of a 40 hour week @ $5.50/hour) to live on.

Is current compensation, adjusted for inflation, really any better now?

it can be up to $2,500 a month. not getting rich, but certainly enough to survive and delay the hard decisions.

You would be correct in your assessment of him. Sad really. I want those kids to be proud of their dad, but when they get older they are going to be ashamed of him.

Well, the tuition waiver is necessary. I am trying to better myself and all, so I take the low pay in exchange for getting to go to school for free.

I have had people in the past come in my business and ask me if I am hiring. If I told them no, they would ask me to sign a paper showing that they had asked about a job. I assume this was necessary to keep their gov't benefits. I decided to mix it up on a few of them and tell them that I wasn't directly hiring but I knew someone who was. When they would ask me to sign their paper, I would say "Let me give you this guy's phone number instead." Every single time, they would say no thanks then turn around and head out the door.
