I realize Auburn's loss was on the road. But, regarding the frequent pre-conference upset losses at home by SEC teams, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that most SEC teams get almost no support from their fans until after football season. UK will sell out. Tennessee will have large crowds. A few others like Florida and Arkansas will have a few thousand show up. But, for most SEC schools, I turn the game on, and it looks like there are no more than 500 people there. There are always tons of empty lower-level seats. That has to be at least a partial explanation why teams like Mississippi State always play better once conference play starts. MSU has at least a couple of scratch-your-head losses in November and December every year.
