"Corn don't grow at all on Rocky Top, dirt's too rocky by far. That's why all the folks on Rocky Top get their corn from a jar."

that pretty well sums it up,that city went ahead with the name change,I figure they will lose it in the long run,but who knows,it is stealing the Iconic Rocky Top,for some reason it reminds me of the bridge to no where,Realtors and Mayors out to make some cash i guess

Just goes to show how messed up ip rights are. Time was you got your lifetime, then it was stretched out a few years past death to help widows and orphans of creative minds. Now it's morphed into some bizarre situation where we act like these people are still among us and we know what they'd want. The school and the state should just quit using any song that isn't in the public domain. If UT dropped rocky top tomorrow that name wouldn't be worth a nickel a week from now.

I think you nailed it.

They shouldn't even be trying to touch the "Rocky Top" name, imo. There are so many other ways to draw business into a city than changing the name of it.

Most of the cities that have changed their names were originally company towns and then the city changed the name after the company closed shop or moved away.

Lake City at one time was known as Coal Creek, they changed the name to draw tourist/sportsmen to Norris Lake. In my opinion it didn't help them too much.
