The people who are complaining about Butch Jones are only doing so because they didn't get the coach that THEY wanted.

Personally, I wouldn't have automatically trusted Gruden, Strong, or Gundy like some of you apparently would have. I firmly believe that whichever coach comes in still has to prove thereself.

After seeing the final outcome and the money offered I'm convinced that UT's budget during the entire coach search was never more than 3 mil per year.

Ill be the first to admit I didnt want the guy at first.
Thought it would be a terrible hire, but the PC got me going in the direction of believing. Now I just have to see what the on the field side has in store.

It's important for a hire like this to nail the presser, and he did. He has everything to prove and is going to be judged under a microscope at every step. But, that's what he needs to do...take it step by step. Good introduction at the presser, he won over the casual fanbase I woud assume (and myself for the time being), now it's on to recruiting and so on.

I feel the same way. The other thing I got from him was that he sure seems like a guy that walks into a room and demands respect.

The biggest thing for me is that he looks like he would be fun to play for.. And he looks sincere in how he actually cares about his players and team.. I would've loved to have played for him.. All my coaches were always dix that I couldn't stand.

Dave Hart may have got the right guy by accident, but The Process was run in a completely incompetent manner. The leaks to the media, the fueling of the Gruden rumors which I never thought we had more of a 5% chance of, and the ensuing response to the Friday firestorm which had Hart's jet flying in a million different directions.

I'll support the hire but you have to be kidding me that this process was run in any sort of a decent manner. It wasn't. I hope we're undergoing a search for a new athletic director soon. I am afraid that if Butch had matched us, that Hart would have offered the job to Kirby. That would have been a complete disaster.

This post went off track the moment you talked about leaks from the AD. Hopefully nobody is stupid enough to think the Gruden rumors actually came from the athletic department.

meh....all my drill sgt's were dix i could't stand but they had my respect. Didn't mean they didn't care about me. Just meant that they cared about me enough to see me succeed. Not an anti-Butch post, (actually the opposite) I can see him demanding respect first and if they like him....well good for them.

I was speaking of the leaks on Fisher (who wasn't really a factor in the search at all), Gundy, and Strong. Where do you think Rucker and Hubbs were getting their information? Remember Hart wasn't using a search firm.

Leaks on Fisher?

The "leaks" on Gundy and Strong weren't leaks at all. Remember, most schools make several offers before they actually find someone, and most of those are made relatively public not through leaks, but through coordinated back-channel releases. Look at all the offers Arkansas made- was their search a failure, too?

I've read two of your posts in quick succession in two different threads. Both were incredibly sanctimonious and both were almost completely wrong. Not sure what you bring to the board.

I have no doubt the leaks about Gruden were not from the AD. However, Gruden was in play. I do hope a certain reporter in Chattanooga (the only with the cajones and the energy to chase this in the Tennessee "free press") files the real story on this search. There has been plenty of circumstantial reporting to piece together a pretty accurate picture, namely:

Hart wanted to be The Man, and he gave the finger to the boosters, the fan base, and the University of Tennessee.

Really hope Coach Jones can get it done, and hopefully he will; but he was not the man to be the most important coaching hire at Tennessee since Johnny Majors.

You all know that you all are just clutter don't you. It is time to quit bellyaching about what might have been, and give our new coach 100% of our support. He may succeed or he may fail. But let's support him until he does one or the other.

Well said. Jones does not have the D1 major program experience to get the contract Mike Hamilton, AKA Dave Hart offered him. We had to pay UofCincy $1.4M to buy out Jones contract. We then gave Jones a $500K signing bonus, and are giving him around $3M per year through 2/28/2019. If Jones is fired or forced to resign, he gets $2M per year through the term of the contract. Jones must have conferred with a lawyer named Derek Dooley prior to negotiating this contract.

For the money, this is certainly not a "home run" hire. It is nothing short of a failed drag-bunt on strike three, with three on and two out.

I love our Vols, but think Hart ought to be fired.

GBO............... despite Hart and his "signature hire."

I'm not complaining about Jones as much as the total incompetence of Hart and Cheek. The one time this program needed a big name hire and we got Dooley 2.0 including a huge buyout.

Sounds like a Jones complaint to me.
