Savory aromas wafted through the kitchen as a table was set with a heaping plate of Thai yellow curry with coconut milk and lemongrass, Chinese gourd sautéed in hot chile sauce and sweet clementine juice, all of it courtesy of government assistance.

"At first, I thought, 'Why should I be on food stamps?'" said Magida, digging into her dinner. "Here I am, this educated person who went to art school, and there are a lot of people who need them more. But then I realized, I need them, too."

i think anyone who goes to art school and then complains about lack of income should starve to death rather than receive assistance from the rest of us.

World needs artists too. Where would we be without Broadway, Hollywood and the Mona Lisa?

hope he is serious. If your chosen profession can't put any money in your pocket then you either need to grab a shovel or quit complaining. The food choices lead me to believe she still doesn't "get it".

And in case you're wondering my wife was an art major but makes pretty good money anyway :p

No surprise here - sadly.

Work is for p*ssies.

Starting to appear it's for dumbasses. Homegirl is eating well. That said, I bet she's got that pasty bohemian thing rolling and smells of an Indian diner. No freaking thanks.

time for people to take personal responsibility for their actions. don't tell me this art major can't get money for mommy or daddy. most of these people are living in high rent areas.

or a job pushing a broom, cooking fries or gasp in a corporation.

The shame these people feel will fade quickly and voila the welfare roles have expanded.

less than one day a week of work at minimum wage would cover the amount they receive in government assistance.

But they couldn't sit on their behinds, watching T.V. and playing video games all day. How dang inconsiderate can you get these days?

My favorite quote from the article

"I'm eating better than I ever have before," she told me. "Even with food stamps, it's not like I'm living large, but it helps."

From me and the rest of us who give up 30% of our income so you dont have to, You're Welcome!!!!

the comments at the end of the article defending the practice are illuminating. Seems they don't see the real issue. The common argument is that eating organic is healthier so what's the problem.

The problem is they should get off their arses and get a job. There a people in legit need and there are people that would rather continue their lifestyle as is regardless of their employment situation. If they can't get an art job they won't work.

If I lost my job as a professor, I'd do whatever necessary to earn income. I've washed dishes before I can do it again.

I paid my first 2 years of college by working 60 hours at fast food restaurants (didn't get a dime from my parents), while watching friends get Pell Grants, not working at all, and constantly complaining how hard it was being a college student. Those people are the kinds of people that are on food stamps buying organic food.

From the SSI website:

"Generally, your household cannot have more than $2,000 in resources. But, if your household includes a person age 60 or older or who is disabled, the limit is $3,000. Resources of people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or benefits under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program are not counted for food stamp purposes. Resources include cash, bank accounts and other property.

the ridiculous part is this theory that a single person needs $200 a month for food. rice and beans and canned vegtables don't cost a lot of money. food stamps should be for those literally on the verge of starving to death.

Why are cars considered differently?

Seems like assests are assests

When they come after us for not paying taxes, they take everything they can get their hands on.

i know guys making $400k a year in NY, Chicago, and SF who don't own cars. not sure that should be used a criteria when giving money to urban hipsters.

And this who opt for guv'mint cheese are on a very slippery slope to worthlessness. Once that choice happens and there is no longer personal pride, done.

Those in immediately irreparable need should partake. Those making a willing choice are in trouble.

I just got some General Tso's Chicken with some Thai hot spice added in. Wonder if that's bad enough (it's damn sure hot enough) to merit me some cheese.
Maybe I shouldn't mention the spicy tuna roll, as it sounds pricy. Who do I call?
