Rodgers is playing 3B this season. As of now it looks like freshman Pete Derkay will play 1B.

I'm not sure on the corner outfield spots and DH.

The starting weekend rotation will come from Warren, Neely, Stallings, Martin, and Linginfelter IMO.

I'm just projecting this from the scant information that is out there.

If the season started today, Neely would be the Friday guy followed by Warren and Stallings. Stallings has a real good feel on the mound and they are really excited about him. Serrano is expected to be the closer. Linginfelter will get plenty of innings this year as well.

In the field, Derkay would be starter at 1b w/Rogers at 3B. From what I have heard, a freshman would probably start behind the plate. Not sure the staff is sold on Santiago behind the plate.

Maybe Santiago will be the full time designated hitter this season with an occasional start at catcher.

one thing we (I) do know is that we don't know......like K mentioned, things have been awfully quite. I'm thinking this talented freshman group will get their opportunities to shine and CDS will make decisions as needed. 9 days and counting!

The staff feels that for the first time since Serrano took over, they have enough quality arms to compete in the SEC. Remains to be seen if the young guys can pitch but they have several guys consistently at 90+ and a couple who will be in the mid 90s.

I am excited to see what the young guys bring. I am optimistic that pitching will be a strength this season, but as you mentioned there are a lot of young guys so it is speculation at this point.

With velocity comes control issues. Usually takes some time for most to harness that velocity. Hard stuff over the middle of the plate gets hammered at this level. Stuff they could get away with in high school will get crushed here.

Looks like next weekend it will be warren, stallings, then lingerfelter or Neely on Sunday. Expect them to piggyback the first weekend also

My best guess at a lineup

8 leftridge
4 moberg
5 Rodgers
3 derkay
2 Santiago
9 Thornton
DH Waldren
6 Bartlett/ southall
7 ammons

Could see Santiago hit 3rd followed by Rodgers and derkay. I'm not sure about DH and RF. In the past Serrano has gone with different lineups depending on matchups. I expect to see waldren playing some also. He could be the RF. At least one day on the weekend you'll see Santiago at DH or RF with another catcher behind the plate.

Westphal is going to be very important to this team. I expect him to be the first one out of the pen in tight/important games trying to bridge the gap to Serrano

I think Southall plays short. Serrano basically said he would start in a video I saw somewhere.

Speaking of defenses, UT has a chance to be good up the middle with Santiago behind the plate, Leftridge in center field, Moberg at second base and Southern Cal grad transfer Reggie Southall at shortstop.
-Mike Strange 1/27/17

He wrote this article after talking with Serrano that day, so I'm guessing Serrano indicated Southall would start.
