So hopefully I can get enough attention on here even though this is such an old thread.

I'm in the market for a fishing kayak. I want my own individualized setup, so buying an already completed set up really isn't for me I don't think. There are small lakes all over the area in which I live all with good fishing, plus I'm a half mile walk to the Chesapeake Bay and about two miles to where it dumps into the Atlantic. The Chesapeake has some crests, but nothing major at all. I want something fairly stable, that tracks well, that I climb inside preferably and any insight on tricks and gear to help store tackle, rods, any other gear, etc. For right now at least, the fishing part will be on the lakes. I don't have any deep sea gear and I'm not really ready to buy any yet. But I would like to take it out on the Bay from time to time.

any help is greatly appreciated.

My brother just got one for Christmas from his wife. I built him a super light Aluminum trailer for it. I'll see if I can get a picture for you. His wife got it from a seller down on the Caney fork river in middle TN. I can get you some more info if you like.

Wilderness Systems, Jackson, and Native make several sit on top models that would suit your needs. I am looking at getting a new kayak in the next year. I will probably go with a Wilderness Systems Ride 135 or a Native Slayer 12.

Jackson- awesome fishing rigs and comfortable to sit in for long floats with ample dry storage wells.
If you are serious, buy from the BSA. They have them at camps and jamborees for sale and you can buy demo models from them for a couple Hundo off. That is where I got mine from . Mine has 3 rod holders and a sail ( have not tried it yet as it has been cold). Interested to see how it works.

That's what I have and I love it. Fast and stable.

Thanks for all the help. I'm not heavy, but I do want stability. I have just a little experience in kayaks and prefer the sit inside kind, but all the recommendations are for sit on top. What makes that better? I'd like to buy a skirt for winter paddling, is that possible with the sit on top?

I test drove a Hobie with a foot operated propulsion system a few years ago. That thing was amazing... very fast. I think it was a $500 option. And for fishing it leaves your hands free. It was a sit on top. Another option was out riggers, added room with netting and made it very stable. Had a sail option too. I think the fully loaded version was around $5,000.

Ok, my brother got the Jackson Big Tuna. His wife got it at Caney Fork Outdoors near Smithville TN.

A friend of mine got a Jackson Kilroy at Caney Fork Outfitters and got a really good deal on it. It's a sit inside that the OP might look at.

Academy Sports and Outdoors has a pretty decent selection of Kayaks for good prices.

Jackson and Wilderness have the most comfortable models for long day trips and overnights. I love it.

I have a WS Commander 120 and my son has a WS Ride 115 and I really like both of them. Jackson makes a really nice kayak and if I'm ever in the market again, I'll probably get one of the Jackson Kilroys. I've paddled one of them and it's a really nice kayak.

The Kilroy looks really nice. Seems to be the clubhouse leader by looks alone.

What's the opinion on the Ascend FS128T from Bass Pro and the Field and Stream Eagle Talon from Dicks?

Either would be entry level used mostly lake easy river fishing.

I'll give it a shot. I know of one guy who has the Ascend kayak. Paddles good and fishes good. Good stability. Biggest complaint the guy has is it is a MONSTER to move around ( 95 lbs with seat ). He bought it last year and is in the market to upgrade. I have no info at all on the F&S kayak.

If you shop around deals can be found on Wilderness Systems and Jackson Kayaks and I personally would much rather have one of those. I do know two guys who bought great kayaks for $500 new. Both bought theirs in the off season (same for me). Come spring the good prices go away. Good luck. JMO

Thanks, I don't want to drop 4 figures on a kayak until I figure out if I like fishing of one or not.

Hog, where you located? I'm in middle Tennessee and have access to multiple types. If you are in middle Tennessee ( I think you are if my memory is correct) , then I am more than happy to meet you one day in the spring and float the Harpeth our some of my other sweet spots to try one or two out of you want.
