VA hospital may have infected 1,800 veterans with HIV - CNN.com

A Missouri VA hospital is under fire because it may have exposed more than 1,800 veterans to life-threatening diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.
John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis has recently mailed letters to 1,812 veterans telling them they could contract hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after visiting the medical center for dental work, said Rep. Russ Carnahan.
Carnahan said Tuesday he is calling for a investigation into the issue and has sent a letter to President Obama about it.

Man o man......

I probably should have quoted this too.....

This is not the first time this year a hospital has been in hot water for not following proper procedures.
In June, Palomar Hospital in San Diego, California, has sent certified letters to 3,400 patients who underwent colonoscopy and other similar procedures, informing the patients that there may be a potential of infection from items used and reused in the procedures.

To be honest, I've been financially torpedoed by my "insurance" company for the second time in two years. The current system isn't working either.

And ... wow again? That's all I have to say. I am almost positive something like this happened (HIV risk related but not through the pooper like here). That is public healthcare people. Even if we could afford it as a country people have got to understand the absolute craptastic service that is going to come from it.

Vouchers. If we agree gov't has an interest in assuring every citizen access to some minimal level of medical care then we should issue vouchers in the name of each person or qualified guardian. Use it however you want to buy insurance, MSA (gov't money becomes yours), turn it into the state in exchange for medicaid,... If you want better insurance then you pay the extra costs. Restrictions should be minimal as people are responsible for themselves. This would drive the health insurance market toward optimum value. Each person would be looking to get the most out of their voucher.

Same thing with education. A voucher system would simultaneously drive quality up and costs down so long as gov't didn't try to restrict parents to anything more than having their child pass a competency test once or twice a year covering math, english, applied science, and basic history.
