Orlando, throneworld of Lord Mouse, can't have all the tourists seeing all the homeless flocking to Food Not Bombs buffets in the public parks. So they have arrested the activists.

Food. Right or privelege?

This should be fun.

[I once saw Faust (operatic version) and the heroine's brother got stabbed with a sword, but got up and sang three arias before he finally died. Such is the state of Capitalism now. I think it just sang aria #2....

PS - Opera is so bourgeois.]

Living in otown, I can tell you the history of this is very, very long, and the issues very, very complicated. Its been in and out of courts for awhile.

Bottom line is that city worries its like a birdfeeder; feed them and they will come.

There is no evidence that feeding homeless people will bring in more homeless people. Their fears are misguided.

You should take the lead to prove them wrong, LG, by inviting several of the local O-Town homelessness victims to your law practice or home and feed them. Just think of all of the positive and inspirational work you would be doing to ease tensions between the haves and have-nots in your area.

You have a right to anything you legally obtain. You don't have a right to other people's food just because you have none.

This food is being given away freely.

BUT, what happened to Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness? You are expounding a world view which hasn't been seen since Caligula. People only have rights IF they have property. The notion of inalienable rights - in other words - the gift of the Enlightenment - you have tossed out the window.

I thought we might find some true retrogrades in this post. Thanks for playing.

The bourgeois mind = barbarism.

Yeah, I'm not Caligula nice try though.

Life - they're alive, and are a product of an accumulation of all their life's choices. Check
Liberty - they have freedom in this country to better themselves and are a slave to no one. Check.
Pursuit of Happiness - if they're starving in the street's its a failure on their end. Just because I don't give them a Get Out of Jail Free Card, doesn't mean I'm denying them their pursuit of happiness. They just sucked at pursuing it. Check

Their mismanagement of their own life has put them in their present situation. Their incompetence in living doesn't give them a right to someone else's property.

Life - government can't take it
Liberty - government can't take it
Pursuit of happiness - go for it but no guarantees

It is an issue on which reasonable people can disagree. Business owners downtown, residents of the area, and visitors don't like to deal with the homeless people who have congregated in the area and the city government has taken a step to try to prevent it from continuing. Local residents feel terrible that their government has banned feeding poor hungry people. Its a mess.

Preserve all fertilized embryos due to the sanctity of "human life." let the actually human mentally ill or behaviorly challenged starve because they suck at life.

I'm confused.

Same. Do people even realize the number of people who are homeless/destitute because of mental illness?

Homeless babies/embryos are cute. Homeless grown-ups are lazy, free cheese seeking leeches upon the working society.

I see the same canundrum in this situation.

What do you propose? Not that being whacko makes them deserving of being homeless, of course.

I don't have a solution, but I don't think allowing them to starve and hope they go to the next town is moral.

that doesn't mean it makes sense to feed them whereever people please.

That's true, but public space seems appropriate, unless the local gov wants to designate somewhere else.

But it's a tricky situation. Much like droski alluded to above, the city of Willimantic, CT was doing alot of outreach stuff, helping the homeless, feeding, and being generally proactive. They are now proud owners of a large percentage of the heroin addicts of southern New England.

Word travels quickly.

I hear you. Perhaps it would take a collective regional effort to address the problem, rather than a "every town for it's self" approach.
