The only thing that this serves to do is to help coaches keep their jobs when they don't deserve them.

And they usually get smashed by the Kansas, Kentucky, and UNC's in the tournament. Or worse, don't even get past the play in game.

I'm pretty sure making a bowl game w a 5-7 season isn't going to help most coaches unless it is the school's first bowl bid in X number of years, (more than 2 or 3 obviously)

Never underestimate the stupidity of athletic directors.

if one of the big time schools starts having back to back 5-7 seasons or such, unless the coach has some recent national championships on the shelf -even going to a bowl those years isn't going to save him

Yes, but I'm talking about schools like the mid-majors who haven't been into a bowl in sometime. There are incentives in a coaches contract for going to a bowl game. I don't know what those incentives are at the mid-major level of football.

So you could have a coach with this kind of resume

2010: 6-7 - W in New Mexico Bowl
2011: 4-9 - L in New Orleans Bowl
2012: 6-7 - W in PapaJohns.com Bowl

Sadly, at most non-BCS schools, and BCS schools like Duke, that's two bowl wins, and a raise for the coach.

I don't understand how all these bowls can make money.

ticket sales, concessions, television deals, and sponsorship money from the companies that want to use the bowl game to advertise both their name and product

They're just making sure Notre Dame has a place to go bowling every year, even if they're 3-9. :)

Fat girls get to hook with drunk dudes at fraternity parties all time... Its just not celebrated or televised.

They should do the same with some of these pathetic bowls as well.
