KNOXVILLE Tennessee's Sept. 24 football game with LSU will likely stay in Baton Rouge, UT Athletics Director Mike Hamilton said yesterday.
Hamilton has had multiple conversations with LSU officials and Southeastern Conference representatives the last few days and he said that all efforts are being pointed toward keeping the game at LSU.
"Pending any unforeseen circumstances, I don't anticipate that changing," Hamilton said.
LSU moved its game with Arizona State this weekend to Tempe, Ariz., because the LSU campus is still being used as a haven for those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Tigers also postponed their season opener against North Texas because of the storm.
Hamilton has requested that the game be played during the day, and he said LSU Athletics Director Skip Bertman seems to be on board with that idea. For that to happen, ESPN would have to agree to let CBS broadcast the game.
The LSU-Tennessee game is scheduled for either 6 or 6:45 p.m. on ESPN.
"Playing it in the day would allow fans to get there and then drive wherever they needed to drive to find a hotel room," Hamilton said.
The main issue is a lack of hotel rooms in the Baton Rouge area because hurricane evacuees can't be displaced by anyone with previous reservations. Hamilton said the Vols still plan to go to Baton Rouge on Friday as scheduled, although the official UT travel party may be smaller than usual. Hamilton said UT has sold its allotment of 7,000 tickets for the game.
