Do you think if Mullen stayed with an off-season to prep as Richardson as the uncontested starting QB, y’all would be in better shape?
I hate Florida but like Mullen given previous personal connections when he was in Starkville. Seemed like he was definitely drawing the ire of fans but genuinely curious if you fans think after halfway into season, y’all are in better or worse or same spot.
As to Mullen, all sorts of rumors about what was really going on including that he refused for the longest time to dismiss the defensive coordinator at the time, Grantham, despite the fact that the Gator defense was playing incredibly poorly with no apparent path to getting better. His stubborness manifested itself in a lot of ways, and the recruiting was not there, either. It just overall seemed like we were going to be stuck in one gear and no effort to get better.
How people feel about the team right now I'd put into two camps, based primarily on age, lol. Younger fans are irrational in their expectations and don't appreciate how long it takes to turn the ship around and overcome prior recruiting shortfalls. They are especially irrational when there are occasional or early signs of success, followed by letdowns.
We started the season beating #7 Utah and the young fan base put way too much stock in that, thinking were a playoff threat. Then we lost to Ky. And then UT. And then most recently LSU.
Us older fans know the pattern and what is reasonable. Of course we have very good athletes and can challenge 80% of the teams out there. But not enough of the best athletes to expect to beat the top 20 % on any consistent basis. Especially on defense. And while AR has all the talent in the world, he is still learning and has a way to go.
So younger fans are disappointed we aren't immediately world beaters. Older fans are optimistic about the future, especially given that we are in the top 10 in recruiting (# 8 last I saw) and appear poised in the near term (measured in years, which is what you need) to continue that trend.
