Head scratcher.

Edit: I read where UNC still will owe Fedora $12M and that the buyout for old Mack will be significantly less. Sounds like it could be a stop-gap type of hire.

I've always thought UNC was one of those football programs that should be a lot better. There is talent in North Carolina and they are a large state school.

If Mack Brown ends up being their guy, they probably also need to get one of these "HC in waiting" types to be a coordinator. He's 67, and I can't imagine he'll stay there more than just a few years.

There really isn't a good reason why they should be as bad as they are at football. I'm not saying their ceiling is competing for ACC titles every year, but their football program should be better than what it is. They've only finished as a ranked team twice since 1997. Like I said in my post above they are a big state school and there's some talent in North Carolina. Their big in-state rival is a football lightweight.

For them thats about as good as they can get. Its hard to dislike Mack. Him and Rick Barnes are very good friends from their long tenures at Texas. Expect Coach Barnes to comment positively about this.

It’s a big name hire with proven recruiting ability. He can het UNC back on path especially if the rumors about his potential staff are true. Probably a 3-5 year deal with new OC taking over after his retirement if successful.

Honestly that's a solid staff IMO. I think that's a smart move by UNC to bring in a coach who knows the area like the back of his hand along with top notch coordinators.
