This has probably already been discussed somewhere, but do I understand correctly that Mack Brown's buyout this year was half of Derek Dooley's?

It might be a factor that when Mack signed his deal both he and Texas were pretty secure in their arrangement, and neither side would've thought the buyout would ever be used.

This can't be true .....can it?

I heard or read this somewhere earlier today, I can't recall where. If I understood, his buyout went up if they brought him back next year but as it stood his buyout was half of what we paid Dooley. I was hoping for some confirmation.

I wonder how Dooley even got a buyout in the first place. I read Saban and Meyer both have no buyout.

In fairness to Hamilton, it made sense to lock down his head coach hire with a buyout after Kiffin walked out the door. The stupid thing was the extension after 2010.

As for Mack I think he was getting close to the end of his contract and the buyout generally goes down over the life of the agreement.

Negotiation is based upon leverage. Hamilton had no leverage when he was trying to find us a coach at the last minute when Golden Boy left in the middle of the night. Saban and Meyer don't have buyouts because they want to come and go as they please. As for Mack Brown's buyout, that's probably a contract written when both parties had leverage. Mack Brown is/has been a great coach, but Texas is a very desirable job. I don't know, but that's my 2 cents worth.

Scout.com looks like it it being discussed in one of their fourms. But you'll need to be a member to access it.

I think he had 4 or 5 years left.

Regarding Saban and Meyer, isn't there a difference between a "leaves for another job buyout" and a "you're fired" buyout?

Could have sworn I read there was a difference in Dooley's contract.

It's sad that Dooley got almost as much as the guy who won 152 games, 2 SEC titles, and NC. He didn't deserve a 10th of whT he got. Further cements Mike Hamilton's legacy as one of the worst ADs in history.
