I am assuming the kid is not going to play this weekend, which makes him missing 1/2 the season. Has it been confirmed that he will take a medical red shirt?

thanks

He needs to take as much time as he needs and not rush things. We could use him now, but no need in risking his future. When he is 100%, he's more explosive than AJ IMO.
On a side note, Sapp is our best LB IMO

Did you think that before everyone started bashing AJ?

AJ is great tackle to tackle. He's a liability in space or pass coverage. Overall, I'd trade him for Austin Johnson in a skinny minute.

If I am not mistaken you cannot get a medical RS until you've used your RS.

Yes, since he hasn't played thus far in 2013, there's no need for a "medical" RS. He would use a normal RS. Should he get hurt again in the future, then a medical RS would be a possible consideration.

But, let's no go there as yet...

I agree. I think if he stays we'll see some improvement from him next year as long as one of our new LBs (or even someone like JRM) can step up and play some passing situations for him.

He's playing 80 snaps a game. If we could get his numbers down to 50-60 then he'd have more gas when he does have to drop into coverage.

This. Imagine how good Johnson would have been had he been given the same opportunity to play position as a freshman that AJ had.

A dump truck with a full tank of gas is still slow.

It's a little senseless to redshirt him if he is able to play at least 3-4 games this year, he could help us make a bowl game and he could also play in that bowl game. He's only a junior and probably will leave after next year anyways. Anyone else?

Had he played less than 25% of the teams plays at the year end he could get a medical red shirt whether he had used his normal red shirt or not. Not applicable here though because it looks like he will not play at all and just use the normal RS.

Since he tore his ACL during the MO game last year, it's not quite a full year since the injury. Some people are fast healers, some not so much. I do see your point, but if he doesn't feel ready to go by now, I don't take the risk of further injuring the knee this year.

I agree that we shouldn't redshirt him IF he can play at 100% for the final stretch of 4 games. He could give us a spark on defense that will be much needed to make it to a bowl game.

If he isn't 100% by Auburn though I'd imagine that it's in his best interest long term to redshirt.

I totally agree Austin Johnson had a great future waiting on him in the nfl too.

If AJ's ability to play in space does not improve... he's not going to have a future in the NFL. I pull for him. I like him. But he has not shown great instincts in pass coverage nor has he proven he can get sideline to sideline nor has he proven he can tackle good RB/WR's in space.

The fact is that Johnson was VERY good in pass coverage AND better at tackling in space than AJ.

As far as I am aware, he is still on the Saints practice roster but they've converted him back to FB. The guy is a very good athlete and will probably latch on somewhere if he stays healthy and sticks with it.

Coaches are still weighing the options with Maggitt.

I imagine Butch would prefer to RS him at this point, but he did make it clear it will come down to what Curt and his family want.

Why red shirt him? Seriously, why? He will still be eligible next year regardless. After that he will probably want to seek his fame and fortune in the NFL and leave with his class so why hold him back later this year if he is healthy and ready to go?

In the old days, red shirts helped give the athlete 4 full years (in 5 years) to play ball. Today they rarely stick around for the 4th year anyhow.
