Not a bad hire, but they definitely settled here I think. Luckily he has connections to Houston/LA so I think he will succeed there.

Major Applewhite is one of the best coaches in the country. Will have great success in Houston and will be the next LSU head coach if Coach O stinks it up, or next Texas coach if Herman some how doesn't succeed.

Could,"could", end up at A&M when they are finally done with Sumlin. That would piss Texas off big time. lol

Applewhite has never impressed me. This seems like an attempt at hiring a guy who will stick around.

Kiffin might not have wanted to agree to the massive buyout that Houston was apparently requiring.

Good choice, based on their own criteria:

Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek on the hiring of Major Applewhite as coach: "We wanted a coach with great integrity who believed in our mission and truly believed in our student-athlete experience. We had our sights set on a focused competitor who has demonstrated success and possesses a deep connection to college and high school football in the great state of Texas."

Kiffin was apparently eliminated from consideration from the very first criterion. The focus on Texas recruiting and that whole student-athlete emphasis wouldn't have helped him, either.

The word yesterday was that they wanted Kiffin, but who knows if those reports were true or not. Everybody there seems to like Applewhite, he was the OC for a high-powered offense, and he was obviously the safe choice. He probably gave them a higher buyout number than Kiffin did, or would have if it got that far, and that may have been another factor.

Applewhite has more than a few skeletons in his closet. I'm not saying that UH should have hired Kiffin, but they should not be talking about "integrity" when they just hired Major Applewhite.

Read on Coaching Scoop that ESPN has tendered an offer to Les Miles. Speaks volumes to what the people in charge at these universities thought of his (CLM) coaching prowess. Seems like USF wants Strong, if he turns down Taggerts offer to be the DC in Eugene. So is CLM or Kiffin the fall back there?

Doesn't he have an on going lawsuit against Texas? I thought that was mentioned as a reason he wouldn't go with Herman there, before Herman was hired.

He has all kinds of issues with Texas. Using bowl trips to plow student employees is a problem.

Applewhite isa boss and he's going to do well. It's just a question of whether or not he's ready for head coaching. It's an ideal situation for him. He might be at Houston for a minute.

He's been overpromoted and exposed at every stop except Rice. Was a ceremonial OC these past two seasons under Herman. Maybe he took enough notes and won't completely suck. :good!:

He'll be grateful to hold on for the full 5 years. Prays to a graven image of Herman every night.

The former women's track coach Bev Kearney was forced to resign due to a relationship with an athlete. After she filed suit, Applewhite's affair with a student trainer come to light. He can't return to Austin.
