Major League Baseball is an embarrassment

Just heard on the radio that MLB also told the Mets they couldn't wear the caps back in 2001 but Bobby Valentine told them to go to hell and did it anyway.

That is true. Never have been a Valentine fan, but when I heard that he jumped exponentially in my book.

It's unreal how antiquated MLB is. It's why the second football starts, baseball becomes an afterthought.

I can't help but pile on either. The man has done more than anyone to kill the sport of baseball in this country. It's crap like that which will have baseball taking a permanent backseat with hockey and soccer behind football and basketball everywhere outside of NYC in a few decades.

I don't think it will take that long. We're already seeing prime time regular season NFL games draw double what World Series games draw ratings wise.

So true. Look at last year. The World Series highlights were the 3rd story of the day after NFL games on Sportscenter.

The NFL kills the MLB in the ratings dept.

Baseball's response was exactly what you'd expect from any beaureaucratic organization driven by a powerful corporate marketing department -- protect the consistency of the brand, blah blah blah. Stupid but predictable. What I don't understand is why the Mets bothered to ask instead of just going ahead and doing it anyway.

Uh, never mind, if this is true. Keeping in mind that this is from Deadspin:

MLB Physically Took FDNY And NYPD Caps From The Mets To Keep Them From Wearing Them Last Night

The memo came from Joe Torre, MLB's VP of baseball operations. No hats, so as "to be consistent around the league." The same Joe Torre, who proudly donned NYPD and PAPD hats 10 years ago.

Wow.

I'm severely disappointed with Joe Torre here. I know he's an employee, but he has to tell Selig "Bud, this isn't a good idea."

I love baseball. I really do. it's my favorite sport. I have an unhealthy obsession with the Atlanta Braves. I'm still going to watch. But this turns me off. It just does.

you would think that something that brands itself our national pastime would be more than willing to honor our national heroes.

Selig is a moron and is ruining the sport. The least he can do is show some patriotism.

The MLB is on a different planet. They have lost touch with their client base.

For one, the season is way too long. We should be well into post season ball now, not playing another 25-30 meaningless games.

Honestly, MLB folk still think their game to be of the purists and still America's game. They still believe the game should be scheduled around yearly harvest periods as was it's initial scheduling criteria.

You could go on and on. It's obvious that they have no clue to modern relativity with their misguided dedication to out-of-place and misguided traditions. So to expect them to soil a blessed uniform with an unapproved and secular paraphernalia, in this case a hat, is below them to consider much less debate.

MLB, the 1800s called. You're the only one that cared to answer.
