This Clip-on Handgun Attachment Makes Bullets Non-Lethal

A California company called Alternative Ballistics has developed an easy-to-install accessory for hand guns that promises to make bullets non-lethal allowing law enforcement to incapacitate a suspect without causing life-threatening injuries.

The most important feature of the accessory, called The Alternative, is that it doesn’t interfere with the operation of a handgun in any way once it’s clipped onto the muzzle. The weapon’s sights still work, and other accessories like flashlights can still be attached.

What happens after the first shot?

I don't really have a problem with such a thing being in the "toolkit" so to speak. I think of it along the lines as bean bag rounds.

Am I the only one that sees the projectile hitting an object straight out of the barrel, not being accurate? Thus completely rendering this useless?

I can see this, I can also see a scenario where this falls off when a LEO draws his service weapon, thus going from non-lethal to lethal very quickly and by accident.

I'm guessing this isn't intended for firefight scenarios. I'm actually curious what the real world effective range of this device is supposed to be but I'm thinking it's best use is somewhere between taser and bean bag round.

Considering police have an accuracy rate around 20 %, this device will only work if they are standing at point black range and shooting the suspect in the back of the head while cuffed.

Isn't this why rubber bullets were invented?

Yep

So you get hit with a really fast, unforgiving metal ball instead. Nothing could go wrong there.

Or how about you just don't put yourself in a situation where a cop may shoot you? And as a cop, don't shoot anyone who doesn't need to be shot.

I've been tased, and shot by beanbags, for experimental reasons and being young and dumb, being about 6ft 240 , I rode bucking horses and I'm tough as hell, never been knocked out, tasters did nothing but give me adrenaline and pull out the barbs , beanbags hurt but don't incapacitate , just left a huge bruise on my chest and proceeded to approach the acting officer at full speed , tackling him before he could pump another round in the chber at 30 feet, go lethal or don't go at all. Just my take.

what were these "for experimental reasons " beatbama ?

these do seem like a way to deliver an accurate nonlethal shot, then to have a lethal load ready

Must have stepped in it coug, sorry but a 200 grain beanbag traveling at 300 fps doesn't do much but piss a man off, one non lethal shot at an armed gunman will most likely cause an accidental firing of the suspects weapon and travel anywhere, therefore endangering more lives , not to mention the suspect being able to fire multiple shots after being hit with one non lethal round.
Georgia Woman pumped 6 rounds of .38 special into the chest of a man breaking into her house, he then proceeded to drive a few miles down the road before he finally wrecked and I still don't think he died.
Go lethal always. Train and learn when to use lethal force.
Working at a shooting range I had the chance to experiment with many non lethal weapons , all that will not get the job done and only endanger more lives.
Volunteering for taser testing just to determine what I will protect my family with was well worth it. I fully understand the concepts but at the same time I wouldn't want to rely on something to protect my family that doesn't incapacitate myself, I know what a 200 grain hollow point will do to human tissue and that's what I rely on as well as my wife to keep our family and ourselves safe.
