Making my first visit to Neyland Stadium next Saturday for the UT-UK game. Really looking forward to it. Any advice on parking, will getting into Knoxville about 10:30 AM be a traffic nightmare or will I get parked relatively quickly? Any good places to get some barbeque and beer before the game? Only place I heard of is "Volunteer Landing", is that place worth it?

Any advice to an out of towner traveling 12 hours from PA to see his first Vol game at Neyland would be appreciated. I am staying in Kingsport, TN on Fri night.

10:30 will be tough. You might want to park at the Ag Campus and ride the shuttle over to the stadium. Calhoun's, which is on the river within walking distance of the stadium, is probably your best bet for barbecue.

It's only 90 minutes from Kingsport to Knoxville. Leave a little earlier and you will have time to tailgate.

if you don't mind the walk, i've always found parking on 17th St is a good bet. I park as soon as you come off the exit and come back under the interstate. other than the walk, it's extremely easy to get back on the interstate. however, don't drive far down 17th st, or you will be sitting for a long long time

Okay if I leave at 8 and arrive around 9:30 that would be better? When you get off 17th st. are their parking areas all over the place and how far of a walk are we talking?

Any good places in that area to eat or should I bring a cooler with my own stuff and enjoy meeting some Vol fans while tailgaiting?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

I always just park in the deck right across the street from Calhoun's (Volunteer Landing). If you get there a couple of hours before the game it's no big deal and it's not too far from the stadium . . .

there is parking all over 17th st, but the tailgating is closer to the stadium or on the strip. I must confess I have connections so I have a few tailgates i can walk up and just get anything i want from there.

I would get into town earlier if you can swing it--less traffic and easier parking.
Agree with hat: Calhoun's is probably your best bet for BBQ and beer before the game. Easy walk to the stadium from there.

I am staying at the Sleep Inn off I-81 Exit 63. Close the Airport I guess but I'm very unfamiliar with the area.

Jaybird, what great Tennessee hospitality....can I have directions to your girlfriends spot??? LOL

Keep the ideas coming, you people are great! Tried this same thing to get ideas on a trip to Auburn a few years ago and earlier this fall on a trip to Arizona for the USC game and got little to no responses....no wonder they coin you Tennesseeans the "Volunteers"!!

Really looking forward to being in Knoxville next Sat.!

I usually arrive about 3-4 hours before game time..and can find a good parking spot on the strip for about $20. Really depends on if you want to experience the VOL Walk or the Band coming down, as to how early you get there. Everyone is right as far as Calhouns.... but most tailgaters are eager to meet new fans and share what they are cooking!

I only come down for one game a year and I park just off Cumberland at 18th street behind a drug store. Real easy to get on 17th to the interstate after the game. If you have never been before, you must see the VolWalk which will be at 10:15 down Peyton Manning Pass to the stadium, then watch the band enter about 50 minutes later. You will enjoy this day!!

This might help ya. The "activities schedule" will change Weds to reflect the Ky Game.

GO VOLS

As said you have to be there for VOL WALK and The Pride of the Southland Band marching to the stadium area.

Enjoy!

I have never gone wrong parking on the street at the corner of Grand Avenue and 13th, underneath the Westen Avenue viaduct. It is across Ft. Sanders from Ayers Hall. It may be a hike... but it is FREE!

For the LSU game we parked at the Civic Coliseum, and the city runs shuttles from there for $4 roundtrip that drop you at the U.C., which is close to the strip or to Calhouns.
