He hasn't done anything the last couple years to deserve one, but contract situations are used in negative recruiting all the time. This strikes me as symbolic to tack a year onto the deal.

I was a little surprised by the move.

Maybe it's just a 2014-Frank-Beamer-like contract extension?

Mainly done to eliminate rumors of "they might be considering getting rid of him," which could possibly become distractions during the season (either to the team or to recruiting).

This man has literally declined every year he's been there with regard to the win column.

2013 - 12-2 overall
2014 - 8-5 overall
2015 - 7-6 overall

The extension was dumb on the AD's part. It's just going to cost them more money to fire him but it won't stop them from doing it. Mark Richt was given an extension before he was fired.
