Peyton was in town and spent time with the players last week.
Don't know how I missed this AP report, and I don't see it mentioned anywhere else here, so here are some highlights....

-USA TodayKNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Former Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was pleased to hear Erik Ainge would start this season after having to compete with other players the last two years.
"For the first time he's been named the starting quarterback. If you think about it, he really hasn't had that opportunity afforded to him yet. He's been competing whether with (Brent) Schaeffer or (Rick) Clausen," Manning said.
"Now he is the guy. It is a great opportunity and certainly there comes a lot of responsibility with that. It sounds like he's really working hard. He really threw the ball well (Wednesday). I'm looking forward to watching him play this year."
Manning said he worked out with some of the Volunteers Wednesday and was planning for more on Thursday. He usually works{s out with the players at least once every summer before he has to report to training camp.
"It makes me feel young again. I turned 30, and I can still throw it around with these 18, 19-year-old receivers, the Robert Meachems, the (Jayson) Swains and (Lucas) Taylors. I enjoy being around the guys," he said.
And he even got in a game of golf with Fulmer.
"We tied," Manning said. "I gave him a few strokes to keep it even."
Manning said he has benefited from coaches sticking with him as a starter.
In Manning's first year at Tennessee in 1994, the named starter, Jerry Colquitt was injured in the opener and his backup, Todd Helton, was injured later. Manning started but rotated some during games with Branndon Stewart, who ended up transferring.
"I think being in a rhythm is important. It may take you one play to get in a rhythm or two or three series. If you are having to come out every two series, that's not easy to do. Now you don't use that as an excuse as to why he made this throw or made this decision," Manning said. "The thing I always liked when I was here was the loyalty, the commitment I had from coach Fulmer, coach Cutcliffe. Sure you'd like to have some of those throws back ... but they stuck with me."
"I'd like to see that with Erik this year. I think he's earned it," Manning said.
Manning also was glad Cutcliffe is back at Tennessee. Cutcliffe was offensive coordinator when Manning was a Vol and left to be head coach at Mississippi. After Randy Sanders resigned, Fulmer brought Cutcliffe back.
"I think he will make a difference," Manning said of Cutcliffe. "At the same time the players are the ones that still have to go out there and make the plays."
