Peyton was in town and spent time with the players last week.
Don't know how I missed this AP report, and I don't see it mentioned anywhere else here, so here are some highlights....

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was pleased to hear Erik Ainge would start this season after having to compete with other players the last two years.

"For the first time he's been named the starting quarterback. If you think about it, he really hasn't had that opportunity afforded to him yet. He's been competing whether with (Brent) Schaeffer or (Rick) Clausen," Manning said.

"Now he is the guy. It is a great opportunity and certainly there comes a lot of responsibility with that. It sounds like he's really working hard. He really threw the ball well (Wednesday). I'm looking forward to watching him play this year."

Manning said he worked out with some of the Volunteers Wednesday and was planning for more on Thursday. He usually works{s out with the players at least once every summer before he has to report to training camp.

"It makes me feel young again. I turned 30, and I can still throw it around with these 18, 19-year-old receivers, the Robert Meachems, the (Jayson) Swains and (Lucas) Taylors. I enjoy being around the guys," he said.

And he even got in a game of golf with Fulmer.

"We tied," Manning said. "I gave him a few strokes to keep it even."

Manning said he has benefited from coaches sticking with him as a starter.

In Manning's first year at Tennessee in 1994, the named starter, Jerry Colquitt was injured in the opener and his backup, Todd Helton, was injured later. Manning started but rotated some during games with Branndon Stewart, who ended up transferring.

"I think being in a rhythm is important. It may take you one play to get in a rhythm or two or three series. If you are having to come out every two series, that's not easy to do. Now you don't use that as an excuse as to why he made this throw or made this decision," Manning said. "The thing I always liked when I was here was the loyalty, the commitment I had from coach Fulmer, coach Cutcliffe. Sure you'd like to have some of those throws back ... but they stuck with me."

"I'd like to see that with Erik this year. I think he's earned it," Manning said.

Manning also was glad Cutcliffe is back at Tennessee. Cutcliffe was offensive coordinator when Manning was a Vol and left to be head coach at Mississippi. After Randy Sanders resigned, Fulmer brought Cutcliffe back.

"I think he will make a difference," Manning said of Cutcliffe. "At the same time the players are the ones that still have to go out there and make the plays."

Hannon was so loaded with potential that everyone thought that he would have done more. I think other factors held him back.

Did Peyton really say anything profound there? Basically said, Ainge should be better, not will be. I hope Ainge comes out and sets the world ablaze, but, until he does, then he is what he has done so far.

Good one season and bad the next....if the rotation holds true we should see better results this year and then count on Crompton next year.

Then again, counting on trashy play his senior year isn't too smart either. Sure, some senior QB's underachieve but there aren't many that play flat-out bad.

Wow. Yeah, Ainge ruined our season. :shakehead: Only him. We all know he sucked... But jeez.

This dude needs to go root for the Lions or something. Just dump off all your problems on the QB. Yeah, that's it.

looking for something that isn't there in my opinion....of course this guy is a little biased, so you have take it with the grain of salt....

it's june, slow time for sports...when there aren't any stories, there's always editorials to fuel someone's fire.

I consider myself a pretty fair person, but that article was so incredibly poor, bad, biased, and completely a tumor in the guy's brain.

How dare Manning help his former school's player.

exactly. I think it's been pretty well documented who has been taking all the No. 1 snaps thus far...Manning commenting on the fact that that should help EA, especailly since he's never had that opportunity at UT, really shouldn't garner any extraordinary attention. Hell, most all of us have had the same opinion since it was announced that he would be taking the No. 1 snaps....

i'd like to get all worked up about this guy's article, but i can't. it's so evident that he has a personal bias, it's not worth it....of course if i really felt like that, i guess i'd be deleting this post huh???

he also said james banks was our best WR at the time, which he probably was, we all saw how that panned out

Well he was right, James Banks was a hell of an athlete on the field but a knucklehead off the field, so that statement was true at the time.

That article is silly to me. Sounds more like jealousy than anything. We all know that Ainge has the tools to be successful in the SEC, he just has to calm down and play.

If Ainge can't make huge strides this year working with the likes of Cutcliffe and Manning, I don't think there's any hope for him.

However, I think that the difference will be night and day and I'm excited to see how our passing game shapes up with Cutcliffe on QB's and Trooper on WR's.
