Marcus Lattimore

Oct. 28, 2012

University of South Carolina junior running back Marcus Lattimore suffered a significant impact to the front of his right knee during the Tennessee game on Saturday. The ensuing hyperextension of the knee resulted in injury to several ligaments. There were no fractures or additional injuries, according to team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy. Lattimore's surgically repaired left knee was uninjured during the play.
Lattimore is resting comfortably and will continue to be evaluated over the course of the week. Marcus has already begun the process of prehabilitation prior to surgery and to his eventual return to football.
Lattimore, a six-foot, 212-pounder from Duncan, S.C., was injured late in the second quarter of the Gamecocks' 38-35 win over Tennessee. Prior to the injury, he gained 65 yards on 11 carries, including a 28-yard touchdown run, against the Vols.
Lattimore was the Gamecocks' leading rusher this season, gaining 662 yards on 143 carries (4.6 yards per carry), with a team-leading 11 touchdowns. He was also the top receiver with 26 catches for 173 yards. He was coming off a season-ending left knee injury suffered against Mississippi State in the seventh game of the 2011 campaign. For his career, Lattimore has rushed 555 times (fourth in school history) for 2,677 yards (sixth in school history) with 41 total touchdowns including 38 rushing touchdowns, both school records.

Hated to see him go down. It looked potentially career ending. Sounds like it may not be as bad as it looked on camera. That was not pretty. All reports are of him being a quality person. Hope he has a successful return.

There is a new yahoo news article claiming that's only a dislocated knee and that he will be ok. I have a hard time believing that outside of it being a miracle. I know he's had a lot of people praying for him. I would love for him to make a full recovery and to play in the NFL.

Only a dislocated knee? That's pretty catastrophic

If nothing is torn, it is not that bad. It might still be a season ending injury (or at least keep him out until a bowl game), however, from the looks of the injury and the initial prognostications it was being reported as a potentially career-ending injury.

If these reports are correct (only a hyperextension and dislocation with no major damage to the ligaments) then Lattimore will play a lot of football in the future.

His ligaments are gone. You don't dislocate your knee without massive ligamentous damage.

This isn't a dislocated patella. This is a dislocated knee. At the bare minimum, his ligaments are gone. I think he would be fortunate if that's all and there isn't a fracture or neurovascular damage.

He's really really lucky if that wasn't a fracture. But like said above, his ligaments are gone with that much damage.

Idk I just think its gotta be worse than these preliminary reports based on what I saw. I hope it's not though. How long before a MRI can be done?

I was at the game. It's the worst football injury I've seen. His leg looked like a noodle

You beat me too it. His cartilage and articulate surfaces are probably greatly compromised. Microfractures and meniscus damage (due as u said, to its unique neurovascular makeup) could be as damning if not moreso than the ligament damage

He's just lucky it was his knee dislocated rather than the femur broken like some speculated.

Bottom line is that he has a chance of returning to football to USCjr if I've read correctly.

The femur is the strongest bone in ur body so the likelihood of it breaking in half from a blow (considering how many times football players take hits like that one) is slim to none. If there had been a fracture it would have been on the lower end of the bone.

By tearing, or even severely spraining, the 4 major ligaments, the femur and tib/fib have nothing to hold them together and the joint capsule is destroyed. The translation in the joint compromises the meniscus, which typically doesn't seem like a major injury, but considering the amount of trauma that happened in the joint, lattimore will probably have microfractures as well.

Thrash is right about the fracture situation. If it had only been a fracture lattimore would have been lucky.

1) how long do you think he will be out? Months? a year?
2) is it possible to ever get it back to normal?
e) mentally he has to be screwed.

At minimum a year imo. Some say a repaired knee can be stronger than before but with multiple ligament damage who knows. Watching McGahee tonight should have given him at least some hope.

McGahee's wasn't near as bad though right? I'm not a medical expert but I know he tore his ACL and MCL in that Fiesta Bowl. He has gone on to have a pretty decent NFL career, especially as of late.

Really pulling for the best possible scenario with ML. Great athlete and could've gone on to be an NFL great.

From what I understand they are similar but the full extent of Marcus's ligament damage isn't fully known yet.
