HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $54 million deal, making him the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft Saturday.

Of the $54 million, Williams is guaranteed $26.5 million.

Texans general manager Charley Casserly had cautioned earlier in the week that anyone concluding the team had decided on Southern California tailback and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and was only using Williams as leverage was mistaken.

The choice of Williams by the Texans could dramatically alter the landscape of the early segment of the first round. The New Orleans Saints, with the second choice, have indicated they would snap up Bush if he fell to their slot. But the Saints had hinted, in general, that they might entertain trade offers for their pick.

The availability of Bush at the No. 2 spot would almost certainly elicit trade offers.

The Texans will probaly be picking first next year too. Unless Mario Williams is the next Reggie White, which I doubt, this could be one of the most boneheaded no.1 draft picks ever.

I agree. Williams is good, but he's not Reggie.

that GM must have been out of his mind of the time...he must not of known the sheer seats that reggie would fill up had they selected him

Excellent decision by the Texans.

They need help on defense.

Incredible... hadn't ever heard of this guy until the combines and whatnot, now he's the #1 pick.

Worst decision since passing on Michael Jordan. Not saying Bush is Jordanesque, just a horrible horrible decision. In the least they could've traded down.

The Texans have a quality back in Dominic Davis. Their defense was terrible. I don't think this is that bad.

The Texans sell out every game. They don't need someone to sell tickets. They need someone who improves their team markedly.

Maybe nobody was offering much for the pick. We'll see if New Orleans gets offers. They don't need Bush as bad as they need defensive help.

True, but the combination of Davis and Bush could have been pretty tough.

Your right, I believe they could have made a deal and still gotten Willams plus a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Seems stupid to me

They could've traded Davis. And I know they had to have an offer or two for the pick. Their biggest need is OL. They could've traded down and got Ferguson or Justice.

I guess they could do that... they already have 10 picks this draft, I just think they'll go right ahead and take their QB and not fool around.

You need to expand your horizons with college football if you didn't know who he was going into the season.

Whoever takes Bush, Saints or Titans, will use him as a bargaining chip.

The Saints owner is too cheap to pay what Bush will ask for, plus they already have McAllister. They will trade Reggie to fill some needs.

And the Titans, Bush would prove a huge bargaining chip to pick up a QB. But instead of gambling on a young QB in the draft, they could trade Bush for a QB that's already proven himself elsewhere.

Doh. As a texans fan first, all i can say is doh. Texans are now on the clock for 2007 draft.

That's pretty tough to understand. The smart money says that Bush makes an immediate and sizeable impact, wherever he ends up.

Or he could play more than half the season, that could help the process along. It's hard for everyone to know everything though, but I'm trying.
