Would you have a problem with a candidate for political office who was any of the following:

  • Single
    Divorced
    Common Law
    Childless
    Homosexual

If your candidate for President, congress, governer or whatever had any sort of a "private life" that was anything other than married (to a member of their opposite sex) with 2.1 kids and half a dog, would that bother you? If so why?

Moreover, do you think this sort of thing is actually important to the average voter? Could a candidate be a serious contender for president on a major party ticket while belonging to any of the above groups? Would that depend on the party and on that party's demographic and ideological constituents? What do y'all think?

Wouldn't bother me. It's all about policy values.

Is it important to the average voter? Hard to say but I would think it carries less weight than many think. Just as Obama and Hillary demonstrate, many support them. There may always be a minority that votes against someone due to race, gender, marital status but overall I don't think these issues are as big as some make them out to be.

I think the only two that people would care about is homosexuality and common law.

The only one I wouldn't vote for is a gay candidate.

why?
That wouldn't appeal to me.

I would be willing to vote for an openly gay candidate...but I would be furious if a candidate I voted for later admitted he/she was gay when it was not known before. Homosexuality is something easily exploited as blackmail because it is widely considered taboo [more so than say, adultery - particularly if your spouse already knows that you cheat (e.g., Bill with Hillary)].

none of those would bother me. In addition, middle names, school attendance at age 10, out of context pictures and ill-informed rantings by pundits won't influence my vote either. I agree with volinbham, it's about their policies.

In an ideal world none of it would matter, we would vote for the person most qualified to do the job regardless of what he or she does in the bedroom. Well, unless it's illegal. But this is not an ideal world so every single point matters. And while many of us may publicly say one or the other doesn't matter, when the curtain is pulled and nobody can see.......it DOES matter.

I can speak for no one but myself but these things are not an issue for me if their policies and convictions are right.

That's why he put the caveat in there about their policies and convictions being right. :p

That would be a great name for a store. Think of all the things you could sell there.

If the store existed, I'm sure Tiger Den and Millsfield Vol would be cashiers there.

I'd even vote for a hobbit if I agreed with his policies...
