Mark Martin -vs- Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a successful Busch Series career and then a promising start to his Cup career. However, he sucks with the COT and he doesn't seem to have the competitive desire that he once did. Mark Martin, however, has finished second in the final point standings more than anyone ever. He has also had more longevity than most other drivers.

Even if Dale Jr races as long as Mark does he won't reach his career numbers, Mark is the better driver and talent.

This thread did take a literal turn yesterday didn't it! I'm sure Jr. was just pissed off after leading more than two laps in a race for the first time in years and then ending up back where he usually runs.

Mark Martin not only is the superior driver, but his popularity is entirely gotten on his own.

In Junior's defense, there aren't all that many drivers who have had or will have as good a career as Mark Martin. He'll go down as the best that never won the Cup, for sure. And to be honest, there are several guys that have won a Cup that aren't as good as Martin. Bobby Labonte, Kurt Busch, and Matt Kenseth come to mind without even having to look up the list of past champions.

I'd throw Dale Jarrett in there, too. Jarrett has three Daytona 500s and a Cup, but Martin has been a better driver for loner than DJ was.

If I were Kurt Busch, Bobby Labonte or Matt Kenseth, I wouldn't trade my career with Mark Martin's. He might have raced a long time but they all have something he doesn't which is bigger than finishing 2nd several times.

I never suggested they would. I just pointed out that he was a better driver than them.
