He and Brent Hubbs are about the only reasons to listen to that one station, but I did wonder what happened to him at UT.

He was there under CBP, then retained by CCM. But now he's not. Anyone know why? I figured it would come up one day on the radio, but it hasn't.

He left for personal reasons, pursue other career opportunities. He wrote a nice blog about it.

Which sucks because he was the brightest basketball mind on the staff.

I have watched him several times on Pennington's show. He has a good manner and comes across as very savvy about the game. But if you actually listen to the content and track what he says - he is flat wrong a lot.

Mark just felt that God was leading him in another direction. I talked to Mark and he's still very supportive of the UT program and Coach Martin.... His salary just wasn't where it needs to be to support a growing family. Those of us who have a relationship with Jesus know sometimes He ask us to step out in faith....THAT IS JUST WHAT MARK HAS DONE AND I FOR ONE FULLY RESPECT HIM FOR IT....

No objections there. I like to listen to him on the radio, because he has CBP and CCM stories. You can't get that just anywhere.

Personally I would rather trust Pancratz drawing up a Bruce Pearl type game plan than Cuonzo drawing up Cuonzo game plans.

Read his blog....I think he could have a future writing for Lifetime TV...seriously much too melodramatic for me...I'm no 'social scientist', far from it, I'm just a dub ole engineer but people like that, are prone to lots of highs.....and lows.....and will and do change perspectives in a heartbeat...

He says a lot without saying anything....so....does anyone know what really happened?

you kind of have to read between lines but basically he got passed over for DOBO at UT when CCM hired his friend and CMP realized he wasn't going to get his shot at coaching here. The coach he had always worked for was serving a show cause and his assistants where at the JUCO level. He ran out of connections at the D1 level for a higher coaching position.

All IMO of course

Can you elaborate?

When an opportunity opened up at UT, and another one at a different university I was intrigued by this off-season, I was excited that I could finally be moving up. I felt God might finally be opening a door for me to move forward in the coaching world. But when those doors got slammed in my face, my future once again became cloudy.

I'm quite sure he is referring to when Francher left and Director of Basketball Operations opened. It was an opportunity for him to get a promotion after several years of the video position, but CCM went with Harris who had only been around the program for a couple of years. That's life, but it would be crushing.

Not sure of the other job he mentioned.

I could care less if he quit and his reasoning of having little to no home life is understanable and commendable. However, the complaining about lack of upward movement and salary is a bit disconcerting to me. He's 30 years old for crying out loud, and he's complaning that he's still the number 3-4 guy? If you want to be in the business and dedicate the time and effort that it takes, with perhaps less financial reward early on than other professions, then don't start a family. My wife and I don't feel comfortable trying to support a family at this point on our salaries, so guess what? We're not starting one.

That's like me complaining that after a few years I'm still just a sales rep and not the regional/district manager. Doesn't sound like he was willing to bide his time and that's fine.

That's how I took it. He wasn't Coach Martin's guy and he was passed over.

You'd never assume that from the way he talks about Martin on the radio. Much respect for him. But it makes perfect sense.

CBP will hire him back next year.

I wasn't really knocking Coach Martin on this. Coaches want their own guys and Mark came from the previous staff. That happens all the time.

Yeah, I get it. Tough for CMP though.

Why didn't CCM hire his guy to begin with? He had to reach out to CMP in the beginning. Why not just get his guy from the get-go?

Well, if you're not knocking Martin on this I'll go ahead and do it. Not necessarily just about this but getting rid of Fancher and then losing Pancratz. You can't just surround yourself with friends in this business. Zo has "yes men" all around him. He needs people who are experienced and especially experienced in WINNING. Not some guy that was coaching HS basketball 3 years ago (no offense to Marco as I'm sure, like the rest of the staff, he's a nice guy).

I think our entire staff has a total of 1 NCAA appearance as coaches.

That's fine. Then just say you feel it's time for a change and God's called you to do something else and you know he's going to take care of everything. Don't complain about lack of salary when you're still only 5 yrs into your career.
