An 8.8 magnitude earthquake is just absolutely massive...and to think that it happened this close to land. Wow. At 8.8, that's about 400 or 500 times stronger than the Haiti earthquake, for reference, wow.

It just shows you the level of engineering and preparation that was done in Chile, specifically after the massive quake of 1968 or 1969. Haiti, in it's defense, may not have had the resources, but it also isn't on a frequently active fault line. Whereas Chile is on the infamous Ring of Fire. That Pacific Plate is always moving.

I spent a week or so in Santiago/Valparaiso about 4 years ago, and they were constructing what was supposed to be the tallest building in South America in the heart of Santiago. I thought it was interesting that they were bold enough to construct it there, considering Chile's seismic history/location.

How strong was the recent quake??

It shifted Earth's axis by 8 cm.

Days are now 1.26 milliseconds shorter.

Santa Maria Island off the coast near Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city, may have been raised 2 meters (6 feet).

Strong 7.1 magnitude quake hits Chile, no injuries - Yahoo! News

Interesting quote...

Chile is a resilient country. You just have to wonder how long they can ride the copper bubble.

Then the actress on NCIS that plays the Massad agent is Chilean.

Que Hugo, who said the Haitian quake was because of a secret American weapons test.

Hugo Feels The Love - Investors.com

He remains an undeclared state sponsor of terrorism with big plans to point medium-range Iranian missiles at the U.S.

Incredibly, Hillary Clinton is doing the same handshake routine she did in Trinidad, again.

Clinton spent at least five minutes shaking hands, smiling and laughing with Chavez at the inauguration of Brazil's new president, Dilma Rousseff, on Saturday, sending out a crazy mixed message to friend and foe alike that the U.S. doesn't know what it's doing.

Newsvine - Obama, Chavez shake hands at Americas Summit

Photos released by the Venezuelan government show the two smiling and Obama touching Chavez on the shoulder. Other photos show them with clenched hands in the room next to the main summit ballroom while the heads of state and government were waiting in line to enter the opening ceremony.

The Venezuelan presidency also said Obama initiated the handshake ......................

Meanwhile when the Honduran Supreme Court prevents a marxist takeover in that country our Hitlery led state department calls them 'coup leaders' and sanctions the legitimate Honduran government.

VOA | US Prepares Further Sanctions Against Honduras Coup Leaders | News | English

Officials here say Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to make a formal determination as early as Friday that the ouster of Mr. Zelaya was an extra-legal coup, action that would set in motion deep cuts in U.S. aid, and other steps against the interim government.

Obama administration officials have been saying since the democratically-elected Mr. Zelaya was arrested by the Honduran military and deported to Costa Rica on June 28 that the action amounted to a coup, despite the fact that officials of the successor administration maintain they acted within the law.

Can we not say now that the US government is not controlled by a cabal of communists??

Anyone answering no to that question is, imo, either;

1. a brainwashed moron.

2. a natural borned imbecile.

or

3. a communist indoctrinated fool.

Ai yi yi. I've only been in two earthquakes, and they weren't worth reporting. This is massive. This has to be one of the biggest earthquakes since measurements began.

Good points, Rasp, on Chile. I read in the WSJ someone giving Milton Friedman credit for "saving" Chile during the last earthquake. All of the earthquake legislation and building codes had been done under Frei and Allende.

Chile is very resilient. They have had to endure much over the last 40 years.

According to this, they have three of the top six now, including top dog:
