I've watched the first two episodes of "Winning Time" - HBO couldn't use the more appropriate "Showtime" because that is also the name of a competitor.
It's the story of the 1979-80 Lakers, picking up from where Dr. Jerry Buss bought the team from Jack Kent Cooke and drafted Magic Johnson first overall. It plays as more of a farcical comedy, where the 4th wall is frequently broken (characters making smart ass quips directly to the camera).
My first impressions are the actor playing Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) is great. He looks the part and manages to pull off Magic's quirky facial expressions pretty well. John C. Reilly is good as Jerry Buss too. The guy playing Jerry West is over the top, however. I have a hard time believing West is really that big a goof ball. Not surprisingly, Kareem comes off looking like a jerk... but that's probably accurate. Also, Norm Nixon's real life son is playing him, which is kind of cool. Hopefully, they plan to include the Nixon for Byron Scott trade from 1983. That was a pivotal moment for the franchise where there was tons of drama. Every member of the team famously hated the trade. Michael Cooper slashed West's tires.
Basically, as a comedy that doesn't take itself seriously, it's not bad - especially if you grew liking that team... as I did.
